I wouldn’t consider most white people very privileged, especially in Alabama, but then again, I don’t know exactly who you are dealing with on your job. One thing I have noticed about people of privilege is that they do tend to complain about smaller things. I imagine it’s because they are used to a life without as much hassle and are unaccustomed to small problems. They are also used to people being available to clean up after them and bear very little responsibility for the messes they often make. In terms of race, however, I worked customer service a few years ago and noticed that black people were actually the most vocal and irritable about mistakes made in their service on the average. But I did work in an area that was probably 75 percent black on a job that served mostly black people, so it’s likely that the percentages were affected by this a bit.

Is that information that is required before your company provides service? As to the comment that the majority of white people are privileged, I would ask what you consider privileged. Is it anyone who has a college education, is it anyone who makes a certain amount of money or is it anyone who lives in a home they are purchasing? Who determines what is an acceptable level of privilege? Personally, I feel very blessed that God has given me the ability to earn everything I have, but I did earn it. As far as the comment about why we complain about presumably defective merchandise – you didn’t indicate what type of customer call center you work in so I’m making an assumption – perhaps it is because having earned the money that was used to purchase a product, we expect the product to be satisfactory and expect the service to resolve the problem about which we call.

You waiters think that blacks don’t tip so you don’t treat us with the same respect that you give whites. That goes for black waiters as well as white. But the reason we may or may not tip or complain is because of the service we get. Treat us with the same respect the whites get and the complaints will go do and the tips will go up.

I could see where it would be easier for some people to be more disrespectful and rude to people outside of their own racial group just because they think it’s acceptable behavior. I notice a trend in the responses where White people say that Black people complain a lot and Black people say that White people complain a lot. As far as privilege is concerned, White people have more privilege than any other racial group in the United States, there is no doubt about it. I’m not trying to say that White do not work hard and that they do not earn everything they have because they do, but success comes far more easily to White people than any other group. If you think it’s not true, imagine yourself as a person of another ethnicity in almost every aspect of your life…going to the store, shopping for homes/apts., going to college, being a student, customer service, getting a job, etc. I am a poor White person but it is something that can easily be disguised and I get the best service and treatment in every aspect of my life because of the color of my skin. I don’t have to tell anyone that I am of a lower class and no one ever assumes any differently. People of color cannot escape these stereotypes as easily even if they aren’t lower class and poor like me.

I think people are small minded if they single out certain ethnicites. Its just part of life so we just have to deal with it. Look I’m complaining right now about complaining. As far as the complaints go, are you working in an area that is mostly white? That would account for most of the calls, the 98%. My daughter is white and she works in an area that is mostly black/mexican. Guess what the percentage rate is in regards to race?–black/mexican. Go figure.
