White people have grown up with the best of everything. We’re told that we deserve the best – that if something is not ‘right,’ it should be fixed. So, we complain. On the other hand, (and this is just a guess) the black community spends so much time and energy just to trying to get something, anything, that there’s no reason to complain, for they wouldn’t get what they wanted anyway. Also, I think this has a lot to do with self-confidence. Self-confident whites are who are complaining, whereas so many blacks lack the self-confidence (thanks to whites) to try to make changes in a dominant white society.

I used to wait tables, and no one complained like African Americans – even my black friends who waited tables said the same thing. Also, in college and in all my jobs, African Americans have complained about more stuff than anyone else. Maybe your help desk provides a service that predominantly white people use, rather than them being disproportionately complain-prone.

Maybe it’s possible that white people tend to be more demanding/rude toward you if they can tell over the phone that you are Black and vice versa. I could see where it would be easier for some people to be more disrespectful and rude to people outside of their own racial group just because they think it’s acceptable behavior. I notice a trend in the responses where White people say that Black people complain a lot and Black people say that White people complain a lot. As far as privilege is concerned, White people have more privilege than any other racial group in the United States, there is no doubt about it. I’m not trying to say that White do not work hard and that they do not earn everything they have because they do, but success comes far more easily to White people than any other group. If you think it’s not true, imagine yourself as a person of another ethnicity in almost every aspect of your life…going to the store, shopping for homes/apts., going to college, being a student, customer service, getting a job, etc. I am a poor White person but it is something that can easily be disguised and I get the best service and treatment in every aspect of my life because of the color of my skin. I don’t have to tell anyone that I am of a lower class and no one ever assumes any differently. People of color cannot escape these stereotypes as easily even if they aren’t lower class and poor like me.

In my line of work……EVERYONE COMPLAINS!….EVERYONE. I think people are small minded if they single out certain ethnicites. Its just part of life so we just have to deal with it. The reason why blacks complain so much in restaurants is because we usually get bad sevice. You waiters think that blacks don’t tip so you don’t treat us with the same respect that you give whites. That goes for black waiters as well as white. But the reason we may or may not tip or complain is because of the service we get. Treat us with the same respect the whites get and the complaints will go do and the tips will go up.
