malika HamptonParticipantI do not think that the delays to disaster relief were because they were black i believe it was because they were poor. If the hurricane had hit a richer neighborhood the relief would have been faster. I think race plays a part in may things in this country but not everything.

malika HamptonParticipantAs an African American I believe it is important to know and respect you history and accomplishments. I also believe that award shows like the BET awards were created to award the excellence of many blacks whose accomplisments were denied at other award shows. However, music awards in particular, I see NO need for a separate award show. Black music seems to dominate this culture. You see it in commercials, movies, etc. When you watch regular award shows like the American Music Awards or the MTV awards it seems to be dominated by Black music… Hip Hop in particular. If you want to create awards shows that celebrate Black achievement in Music… pick another genre… Black music is everywhere.

malika HamptonParticipantThat is very true. I like all types of music and am constantly being told that I am not Black. Hip hop music does not make you black. People don’t seem to understand that. Hip Hop is not a cultural aspect of every black person in the U.S.. I grew up overseas and did not hear any Rap until I was a teenager. I grew up listening to Sting and the Police and music like that. The only thing that makes you Black is your skin color.
