Time, time, time: Most people don't have it. The quicker the better. A lot of these kids are from single parent homes, and even when both parents are in the home, many times, both work full-time jobs. I also think that many of these kids are simply overindulged, hence, the behavioral problems. They get what they want, when they want it. If you looked around in one of these obese kids rooms, you'd probably find a TV, VCR and the latest game console (with last year's in the closet.) Which is yet another reason these kids are overweight: no outside activity.

Try just treating them as you do anyone else. For example, if I walk through a door and my able bodied friend is right behind me, I hold it open for my friend. I would do the same if my friend were physically challenged. I work with a disabled man and he is quite capable of asking for help when he needs it. As I've gotten to know him, I've learned what he consistantly needs help with and usually offer to help. If you just relax and get to know the person, knowing when is appropriate to help will come to you naturally.

It's a combination of sympathy and disgust. I don't mean that I'm disgusted by the way the person looks, I mean, that the sight of a fat person brings my own fear of being fat to light. I have had problems with my own weight in the past as well and worked very hard to trim down, and the thought of going back to what I was is terrifying. In short, my reactions to fat people have nothing to do with them and everything to do with me.

People are also picked on for being taller than average, over weight, having freckles, and a whole list of other things. Some people are just poor conversationalists looking for something to talk about, and some need to pick on other people to feel good about themselves. Whatever the reasons or intentions of their picking..you don't owe them a response. Commenting negatively on someones' physical appearence is just rude.
