SeleneParticipantFirst, have you ever seen some people from a trailer park move into a nice neighborhood? These things are more of a class thing than race. When poor minorities obtain enough money to move to a nicer neighborhood, they are still the same person they were in the ‘ghetto’. If you grew up in a place where no one maintained the yard, it’s not easy to start devoting a lot of time and money on something you never cared about. Some people can afford a better home but can’t afford to buy a new car, too. Plus, people from the ‘ghetto’ have their own culture. Just because they live in a new area doesn’t mean they want to completely acculturate to the white, suburban culture. Nobody wants to be a sell-out. About the walking in the street thing: attending college in a college town, I know plenty of white kids who do the same thing.

SeleneParticipantJust like all white people aren’t the same, that goes for blacks, too. The ones who act ‘hood’-like might be from the ‘hood’ or think it’s cool to act that way. ‘Acting white’ is a term other blacks use to describe a black person who they believe is rejecting their culture and trying to only be associated with white people. The definition of ‘acting white’ varies within the black community. In poor areas, it could even mean being educated or having goals. Why this is so is up for interpretation. Coming from the black middle class of Jacksonville, I believe a person is ‘acting white’ when they refuse to talk to blacks, have friendships with blacks or date blacks because they don’t want to be thought of as being black.

SeleneParticipantIt’s the same reason why feminist, low and some middle class, environmentalist, and homosexuals vote Democrat. The Democrats show more concern for their issues and don’t treat African-Americans like they are the ONLY reason for their lower position in the United States.
