I believe that the reason most blacks vote Democratic is because of the stance the Democrats take on social reform issues. The Democrats tend to enact more social welfare programs that enable the people more than do the Republicans. They push for larger welfare programs, goverment subsidized health care, higher minimum wage, etc... I don't think that this is attractive only to blacks but to any lower income minorities. Blacks in this country for the large part are still in the lower income class and the Democrats believe in providing, for lack of a better term, handouts for these classes. Kind of a rough way to say it, but I think it's the truth.

Very simple. Democrats deal more with the issues of helping lower income voters. Rep. deal more with the rich and corporations. And before anyone gets mad the Republicans do help the poor too, its just a little less than Democrats. (TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMICS)

Most blacks vote Democratic because of the issues that Democrats stand for. Affirmative Action, which is apart of the Democratic platform is predominatly a black issue. Republicans have neglected the 'black issues.' Democrats are better at protecting civil rights whether it is for blacks or any other minority. Another reason is that blacks live mostly in big cities. Republicans are consistently trying to take funding from big cities and put it into 'whiter' suburban areas.

Ever since LBJ signed the Civil Rights Bill in 1964 and Dixiecrats integrated into the Republican Party, black voting patterns have trended heavily Democratic. Since the majority of America's black population has roots in the South, we are more aware of the Republican party's welcoming of these people who opposed Civil Rights and continued association with groups with racist agendas are reasons for us to believe that Republicans aren't looking out for us. Republicans often run candidates with clear ties to racist groups and have candidates who at the very worst hold racist attitudes toward the black community and at the very least run candidates indifferent to concerns in the black community. Also, the Republican party opposes many government institutions and programs that help black people as most blacks believe the government has a moral imperative to maintain social justice and to maintain a social safety net.

The reason is because Democrats cater to them by increasing the amount of welfare and by providing loopholes so that these same people don't have to get a job. Most blacks want everything given to them and the Democrats are doing their best to make that a reality.

There is an erroneous perception among Blacks that the Democratic Pary has been the party which has 'done the most' for them. It began during the Great Depression during FDR's term. Although research will show that FDR initiated nothing that shows he enacted any legislation or even gave a speech that was directed specifically to Blacks, his wife DID. It was through her activities against lynching and in support of equal rights, that the popularity of the D.P. with Blacks started. Prior to that Blacks supported the Republicans (the party of Abraham Lincoln). Later H.S. Truman desegrated the U.S. Armed Forces by executive order, an action which displeased far more Democrats (particularly in the South) than it did Republicans. Still the D.P. in general received credit for it. Later J.F.K., mostly through the actions of R.F.K, was perceived as being for civil rights although he, like F.D.R. did not little substantive to earn it. His use of the National Guard in the southern states was not so much an indicator that he was 'for' Blacks but that he would not tolerate insurrection within the D.P. by southern Democrats and challenges to the authority of the federal government. NOTE: that D.D.E., a Republican, can be shown to have down more than J.F.K. Thurgood Marshall, an important man within the NAACP, was not appointed by a Democrat. The 'Great Society' programs of L.B.J. are arugably the first substantive actions by a U.S. president, after Lincoln and Truman, which can be said, fairly or unfairly, to be of direct benefit to Blacks. Again, this legislation was passed in spite of the strident opposition of the majority southern Democratic Party rank and file. NOTE: that R.M. Nixon could also be said to have done more that benefited Blacks than any subesquent Democrat. In short, Democrats rightly or wrongly are PERCEIVED as being the Black man's party. Individuals such as Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and popular (though inaccurate history) history ensure that this perception continues. Note that a Republican president, G.W.B, has appointed more Blacks to positions of great responsibility and visibility than ALL previous U.S. presidents. Yet, he is still perceived as a virulent racist by many.

I think that many black people see your white stereotypical old-school Republican as 'the man'. The one always trying to keep the black man down and never giving a brother a break. Someone who's opposed to many of the social programs which often aid the black community and happy to keep things the way they are. They see democrats as more progressive and more accepting of social reforms.

Due to the fact that many people who are black struggle to work against discrimination and to have equal opportunity in this country, it is difficult to support the republican regime who does not support the struggling economic classes and issues such as affirmative action. Look at how many people in the armed forces are from lower economic classes. This is a way out (if you don't die)of economic oppression.

The republican party, 'Party of Lincoln' decided in the early 60's to seek the white southern and tradionally white democratic vote. This came to a Head when LBJ was muscling through the civil rights act of 1964, not real popular with southern whites. The GOP fought often vicously filibustering against civil rights being federally mandated. LBJ a southern Dem pushed it through. FYI Republican who voted for Civil Rights; Bob Dole, against, George Bush the elder.

Most extremist groups, Neo-Nazis, wealthy White business owners, and married people with families vote Republican. Past Republican presidents such as Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and Ford were viewed as unsympathetic toward the needs of people of color. The demographics are wildly different with Black families as only one third of us are married, compared to seventy percent of whites. To keep the answer as concise as possible, I will say that the Democratic Party has become synonymous with social change for people of color. Bill Clinton was embraced by Blacks in droves because he was seen as cool. George W. Bush, Bob Dole, and recent Republican candidates have refused to give speeches to the NAACP because these venues are viewed as unconfortable. Republican candidates do nothing to pander for Black votes. This is because the Latino population is increasing exponentially; therefore, they chase after Hispanic votes. On the other hand, the Black population isn't really growing. Conservatives include abortion, gay marriage, and other moral issues as focal points in their campaigns. These issues appeal to the fundamental Christians, not the average Black family. Until bigots, fanatics, and unsympathetic people leave the Republican Party, I think Blacks will continue to vote for Democrats.

Well a few good answers Stromthurm - Jesse Helms - Trent Lott - David Duke - Ronald Regan Af-Amer initally voted Rep after reconstruction but due to the intregration of the Dem party and the movement of Dixiecrates(Helms - Stromthurm, etc..)to the republicans, the preference for the other occured. It was solidified with Barry Goldwater talking the rep party into moving for closer ties to the segrationist of the South.

My best guess is that Democrats' policies tend to favor the working and middle-class ('common folk'), as opposed to Republicans, which cator to the upper middle class, well-to-do, and corporations. Most black people in the US are working/middle class, and therefore, vote Democratic.

It's the same reason why feminist, low and some middle class, environmentalist, and homosexuals vote Democrat. The Democrats show more concern for their issues and don't treat African-Americans like they are the ONLY reason for their lower position in the United States.

mostly because republican policies involve these things: -cutting funding for lower class people -benefits for the rich -removing monetary and eductional aid (of course Not all republicans) but these things go against african american ideal. (of course not all afr. amrericans) but generally, blacks are poorer, less well educated (for various resons), and need all the help we can get. why vote for someone who will take away helpful things?
