The Jews, like all of us, sometimes want to make sacrifices in order to protect the peace, even if it means giving up a little dignity. The problem comes when the meaning of ‘peace’ is distorted from ‘absence of danger’ to ‘absence of conflict.’ Then people start to believe that NOTHING is worth fighting over. This might sound farfetched, but look at the last few years: much of world seemed to be willing to let Hussein continue to rape, murder, bribe UN officials, and steal from his own people rather than go in and stop him. The same was true in the 1930s. Many Jews thought ‘peace’ was so important that wearing the yellow star (and much worse) became acceptable.

I am a Christian and a conservative, and I see no problem with the following: a) not wanting lazy people to get my hard-earned money; b) preemptive strikes on enemies; etc. Yes, we should love our enemies, but that doesn’t mean we can’t protect ourselves against them (even as we pray for them). Yes, we should feed and help the poor, but if they take our money and go drink with it instead of get a job, then the handouts stop. And as for Dr. King’s statements, it’s liberals (NOT conservatives) who are distorting his views, with their race-preferential policies. Being a Christian doesn’t mean you have to be naive, or a doormat, or a smelly hippy. And Christianity is NOT about ‘being nice to everybody’ or some such drivel; it is about your relationship to the Messiah. I hope I’ve cleared up some of your confusion.

People everywhere will ‘go along to get along,’ even when it means placating a dictator. Look at the last few years–a significant portion of the entire civilized world would apparently rather have just ignored Hussein than gone in and end his reign of terror. People (1930s Jews included) seem to believe that ‘peace’ means ‘absence of conflict’ (as opposed to ‘absence of danger’). When you have that mindset, you can put up with a lot–and the world is worse off because of it.

At my school we laughed at NPR as a prime example of left-leaning propaganda. Now that I’m in the army, even the privates (whom NPR liberals say we’ve duped into fighting a war for us) call NPR ‘Radio Free Moscow.’ I’ve got a friend in the 1st Armored who says the whole division was pissed off when NPR correspondents came through Baghdad and refused to interview the 99% of soldiers who thought the war was just and were happy to be doing their jobs. BBC is even worse, though.

Sorry, Alma, you’re wrong. Check your stats with the Centers for Disease Control, the State Department, or any other agency that keeps statistics about this sort of thing. I looked it up when I wrote an article for my school paper about it last year; off the top of my head I can’t remember exact figures, but every year something like 63% of new HIV cases are gay men. The next lowest category is something like 28%, and it’s needle-drug users.
