How did the Nazis get the Jewish people to wear the yellow Stars of David? My theory is they fed them some line of positive B.S. and then when everyone was wearing them, they changed their tune. And why didn't they rip them off when they found out it was being used for a nefarious purpose?

Because Adolf Hitler was a dictator. Jews were faced with a choice: 'Do as the Fuhrer says or die.' If you live in a dictatorship, it's amazing what you'd be willing to do when a gun is held to your head. Simply tearing the star off and getting caught meant instant death. If you look at any documentaries of World War II, you will see that Hitler was an excellent public speaker, and he had the ability to put a positive spin on just about anything. But when worse came to worse, 'Do as I say or die' ended any discussion.

The stars were mandated by law, and failure to comply could mean anything from prison to removal to a concentration camp (this appeared as someone simply disappearing, much like in Communist Russia). People usually knew if there neighbors were Jewish and would report if they weren't wearing the star - for rather substantial rewards.

People everywhere will 'go along to get along,' even when it means placating a dictator. Look at the last few years--a significant portion of the entire civilized world would apparently rather have just ignored Hussein than gone in and end his reign of terror. People (1930s Jews included) seem to believe that 'peace' means 'absence of conflict' (as opposed to 'absence of danger'). When you have that mindset, you can put up with a lot--and the world is worse off because of it.

The Jews, like all of us, sometimes want to make sacrifices in order to protect the peace, even if it means giving up a little dignity. The problem comes when the meaning of 'peace' is distorted from 'absence of danger' to 'absence of conflict.' Then people start to believe that NOTHING is worth fighting over. This might sound farfetched, but look at the last few years: much of world seemed to be willing to let Hussein continue to rape, murder, bribe UN officials, and steal from his own people rather than go in and stop him. The same was true in the 1930s. Many Jews thought 'peace' was so important that wearing the yellow star (and much worse) became acceptable.
