NatalieMemberI was diagnosed with MS when I was 24. That’s where the stats you mention cease for me. I had never travelled until I was 26 and I live in the temperate climate of southern Ontario, Canada. The socioeconomic class I grew up in was working poor and although my IQ is above average, I never completed high school. This applies to about 25 people I know who also suffer from MS. Where are they getting these statistics from?

NatalieMemberI live 1/2 hr north of Toronto in a town of 40,000. My first trip to T.O. was 4 years ago to St. Michael’s hospital (M.S. clinic) When leaving the subway, I was so disoriented. To my surprise I didn’t even have to ask for directions-2 people saw my bewildered expression and inquired about my destination. I have met MANY friendly people in T.O. from ALL walks of life, race, religion and gender. I frequent a many clubs there and have encountered MANY friendly women. To say we are all ‘cold, calculating, money-grubbing narcissists’ is a very cruel generalization and a bad attitude…and perhaps the reason you haven’t met anyone.

NatalieMemberI am a size 22 and in the past four years I have NEVER had a comment about my weight. Do I have self control? Oh yes…more than my ‘thin’ counterparts (my boyfriend is 6′ 170lbs. and eats large portions of fast food and high fat and refined sugar/starch foods ) Why am I overweight? There are many reasons. One is genetic-the only slim person in my family has an eating disorder. Another is the fact that I suffer from Multiple Sclerosis- you know how run-down you feel when you are sick? Try LIVING with that feeling 24/7! Lazy? How I envy you who get out every day and can enjoy life! To go to the park and play with your children. My mother was often a victim of discrimination and ridicule when she was very large. I haven’t had a comment made (to my face at least) since high school. Maybe it’s attitude maybe I’m oblivious. I myself have never judged a person just by their weight….even when I was slim.

NatalieMemberAlthough I wouldn’t go as far to say that I wouldn’t recommend America as a tourst destination, I would caution a fellow Canuck about the service there. Canadian minimum wage ranges from $5.90 – $8.00 and I rarely experience terrible or blatantly rude servive at home. The jobs here are just as menial – I worked in a coffe shop on the midnight shift for 6 years getting paid $6/hr. serving customers, cleaning toilets …being sexually harassed-and still managed to, at the very least, smile. My fiance and I went on a shopping trip to NY . While driving down, we stopped at Dennys. The waitress wouldn’t even acknowledge my partner (because he’s East Indian? I really don’t know) and she practically threw our plates in front of us. The Host wasn’t particularily welcoming either. Only once would I say we received ‘good’ service. At Lane Bryant the staff seemed to be reasonably knowledgeable about the clothing. People there aren’t as friendly either. At home, it seems typical that people will look behind them whe going through a doorway. If someone is behind them, they will hold the door. I had TWO doors hit me (one shut hard) when some oblivious tool in front of me let it go. When I held the door for people….NOT ONE person thanked me. Will I go back? Probably. The taxes are lower there. Will I enjoy my trip? Not likely.

NatalieMemberI am a white female and if my daughter EVER used profanity towards me (or any other kind of hostility) she would be reprimanded accordingly.
