You know what I was thinking the same thing. The way I see some kids acting now makes me upset. In most cases I would blame the parents. It seems that many parents now are trying to be friends with their child and not disciplining them the way they should. Not that there is anything wrong with being friends with your child but there needs to be a balance. I would say I had a good balance of discipline and fun with my parents. (My dad was more discipline than fun, lol) Even though I had fun with my parents they chastised me when needed. I didn't understand then their strict upbringing but now I appreciate it. My parents taught me hard work, discipline and how to respect others. I know all the blame can't lie solely on the parents but they need to get stricter on the discipline - not too strict though. (Being too strict would be a form of abuse and may cause a problem child) I guess it's illegal now but I think children benefit from spankings not beatings but spankings. My parents spanked me and it did me no harm, contrary to popular belief. Have you ever heard the scripture '..you spare the rod, you spoil the child..'?

I just read some of Cosby's comments and agree with what he is saying. His comments can be taken as harsh but they needed to be said. Our ancestors died so that we could have the right to be educated and some of us just don't appreciate it. Its sad to see little kids that can barely read and write but can recite all the lyrics to the latest songs. What sense does that make? Like Cosby said much of this can be blamed on the parents. If they don't teach their children to value education, who will? Its like they leave everything up to the school systems. When I was a child my parents taught us basic things like reading and writing at home first. They made us (my brother and I) read books, write reports, and do math problems in addition to class homework. As Jesse Jackson said, 'let's fight the right fight'. Yes racism is prevalent but we can't let that stop us. Why feed into the stereotypes? People already expect blacks not to be illiterate and not to succeed. They want to see us self destruct. So let's fight back and educate ourselves. So I want to congratulate those of us who are getting educations and succeeding in life. We should also inspire others to persue education.

That's not a cultural thing at all. My thing is, if I didn't buy the food, I won't eat it. I will ask first before I eat something - unless my roommate and I agree to share food. I was raised to be respectful of others and not eat up everything. So I think the problem is just with your girlfriend's roommate. Please don't take things done by others as an ethnic norm.
