‘Oral sex and foreplay’ are not the only possibilities for two women together. I’m not going to go into details, but there are plenty of activities two women can enjoy without involving silicone, leather or anything but their bodies.

Yes, you are right. It is a common attitude for Deaf people to enjoy being Deaf, have mostly Deaf friends, and Deaf parents probably will want their deaf child to grow up to be Deaf too. Wait! Did you notice I said ‘deaf child’ and ‘Deaf parents’ in the last sentence? There’s a difference. ‘Small-d-deaf’ is someone who cannot hear. ‘Big-d-Deaf’ is someone who is part of the Deaf community, speaks the Deaf language, etc. An excellent book is by Matthew Moore and Linda Levitan, it’s called For Hearing People Only. You can probably find it at your local library.

I am hearing, but I have been signing since I was four. I am not staring because I think I will catch deafness, but because I am listening in … I shouldn’t be eavesdropping. (By the way, Peter G., the original message did say ‘…and stare while we sign.’)

As was mentioned above, I think this is actually related to rave culture rather than gay culture. In my area, sucking on a pacifier is a sign that the person is ‘rolling’ – tripping on Ecstasy or MDMA.

Although what’s been said above is also true, don’t forget: not all of the lesbians you see are obviously lesbians! It’s only the physically stocky ones you NOTICE. There are plenty of slender, delicate (and probably femme) lesbians running around the streets. 😉

I wouldn’t say I get turned on by seeing myself naked, but I can definitely tell if I’d be turned on by myself if I were someone else. Instead of thinking ‘I look really good,’ I can think ‘yeah, I’d go out with me, too!’ But it isn’t an issue only of sexual orientation — it’s an issue of narcissism. I don’t get turned on by myself, but a particularly narcissistic person (of any orientation!) probably could.

Wow, Jill, that’s a good one! I’ve never heard of this, but I’ll probably start watching all of my dyke friends for signs of Winnie the Pooh. Or perhaps it’s just from your area?

Good question, Lynn — I don’t blame you for asking it. I’m a butchy femme: there’s no doubt that I’m a girly-girl, but I’m also plainly butch at times. I’ve been in a relationship with another femme, and I’m currently in a relationship with a butch girl. I do prefer butch women, but I don’t want to be with a man: I’ve tried it, and don’t get the same out of relationships with guys and I do with girls. I think the best answer was one I found in an erotica anthology (I can’t remember which): ‘…and she knows that strapping it on doesn’t make her male.’ Butch women aren’t trying to be male: they’re butch women.
