I’m speaking as a guy who was into the whole goth thing for a few years and then… well, wasn’t. Spiked dog collars, long hair dyed black, skull rings… I was a full-on weirdo. Still, I don’t see anything wrong with it, and I still prefer to wear gray or black rather than, say, yellow. Remember that your parents have legitimate concerns. When they read articles about teen suicides or the Columbine killers, they probably see and hear about kids that fit your description: quiet, loners, secretive… and wearing all black. I suggest a twofold approach: confront them with this ridiculous image, and switch to a mixture of dark colors and black. Personally, I developed a deep love of midnight blue and deep maroon. Just tell your parents ‘Look, I know you worry, but you know me better than this. You’ve known me my whole life. Do you really think that a black dress means I’m going to slit my wrists or shoot a bunch of my classmates? I just like the way it looks’. Faced with how silly their presumptions are, and a little color in your wardrobe, I think they’ll come around. My parents did.

I spoke to some of my male friends about this, since it piqued my interest. In general, we seem to agree that a big factor is the difficulty in determining an Asian girl’s real age. Asian women seem to age much more gracefully than either black or white women, and the end product tends to be less drastically different as well. My family is of Italian descent, and our women start out gorgeous, thin and tall, but end up the short, fat, gramma-types you would expect. Asian women seem to maintain their youthful beauty longer. I suspect their lesser height and finer features, both signs of youth in all races, contribute to this.

I think it’s important to remember that the typical ‘50% divorce rate’ stat that’s thrown around is a little sketchy. It’s basically a projection based on past generations. From what I understand, the assumption goes like this: people married in the 50’s had a 10% rate, 60’s 20% rate, 70’s a 30% rate, and so on. Thus, drawing a line on a graph, we can assume 50% of folks getting married today will get divorced. Seems reasonable, but it’s not. First of all, by that logic, in a few decades, 100% of folks will get divorced. I think that’s unlikely. Second, there may be a few subtle differences between me and my parents (note sarcasm) that could change the success of my marriage as compared to theirs. In other words, the answer to your question may be, who says we do get divorced so quickly?
