I think the key in your question is ‘white culture at large.’ What is ‘white culture?’ There is Italian culture, English culture, Greek culture, etc., but I don’t think there really is a ‘white culture.’ One can define ‘black’ (African-American) culture simply because there’s no way to separate African-Americans by their ancestors’ ethnic groups; I’m sure many don’t know what part of Africa their ancestors came from. So while ‘white’ is not one culture, ‘black’ is, at least in the United States. Regarding the title of the book, I bet they picked it because the question is something most people have never heard. It attracts attention, yet is so absurd it won’t offend most people. If the title brought up a more well-known stereotype, like ‘Why do black people steal so much,’ it would be far more offensive, and for good reason.

Stacey, I think your change in attitude is more due to internal factors – your own perception – than external ones – a change in teenagers as a whole. By most statistical measures, such as juvenile crime, drug use and college attendance rates, today’s teens are ‘better’ than those of your generation. There’s no way to measure work ethic, but I would doubt there’s been a major change in the past 10 years. I think most people are convinced that kids today are worse than they were, yet I’m sure if those same people looked back at their own adolescences, they’d see it’s not so simple.

That sounds to me like Jews should note how the Egyptians welcomed Jacob’s family during the famine and treated them well until the new, mean Pharoh took over. While religious conservatives may think differently, I don’t think Genesis condemns masturbation. Onan’s crime was not that he masturbated, but that he refused to impregnate his late brother’s wife. In the Law of the Bible, a man was required to marry his sister-in-law if his brother died. If he refused, she got to spit in his face in public. The goal was to carry on the name of the deceased. By practicing withdrawal in his marriage, Onan was preventing his brother’s name from living on. Masturbation is only ‘selfish’ if it takes the place of pleasuring one’s spouse. For an unmarried person, there is likely nothing wrong with it spiritually. In a previous response, a Christian woman wrote that masturbation would require impure thoughts. From a Christian perspective, that might be true, but not from a Jewish one. I think a Jewish sage said that the sex drive is a good thing because it encourages people to get married, which is what God wants. She also said she doubts God would would want to see her masturbate any more than God would want to see her smoke or swear. But smoking hurts oneself, and swearing is said to hurt others. Modern researchers say masturbation is by no means harmful and can actually be healthy.
