John K.MemberThe “legal age” of 18 is a falsehood. Yes, it is the traditional age of passage from childhood into adulthood, but that is very misleading. At 18 you can take the steps to become independent, but that does not mean you have the maturity to use that independence wisely. For instance, most of the people under 21 who complain about drinking laws do not drink responsibly. While some people might see this as a result of the drinking laws, I have noted that it has more to do with the maturity of the person involved. Most young drinkers have no self-control. Go to any college party (or high school party, for that matter) and the evidence will be right in front of you. The same is true for renting a car. Statistics show that young drivers are more likely to have serious accidents. Since car rental services do not want to have their cars destroyed or damaged, they choose to rent cars only to experienced drivers. That means they set a minimum age of 25, which is about the same age that your car insurance rates will drop.
Now, so far as military service goes … I agree that the age for service should be increased to 21. Again, it is a matter of maturity and discipline.

John K.MemberI think your inference is correct. We live in a world of massive ignorance. Most people are only aware of the most obvious scientific, economic, religious, political, etc. information, and most of that comes from questionable sources. We assume that anyone with a good grasp of logic and information has to have learned how to find and process information. Some problem-solving ability usually comes with the package, and those skills are hard to come by without a college education. So in general, we assume that the intelligent and informed would have some kind of a degree. Of course, that is not always true, in either direction. I know plenty of people who never went to college and are extremely well-educated, and others with doctorates who seem to fail to grasp even the most obvious concepts.

John K.MemberBravo! Finally, someone has addressed the role of the parents in the poor behavior and discipline of children today. While I would not go so far as to suggest that all parents have been negligent, certainly a number have. Ever notice how a number of these negligent parents are the same people who rebelled against authority in every possible way in the ’60s and early ’70s? Hmmm … wonder if there is a connection there.

John K.MemberIn the past, black people were typically directed into vocational tracks rather than college prep – if they were even given guidance at all. Now, the opportunities for black people have increased, and you can take whatever courses you like. Since this is a relatively recent change, non-blacks might find it different.
