Why are many of my white and Asian peers so astounded that I, a black female, am in advanced level courses? I do not think these reactions stem from racism, but are a learned assumption from childhood that has never been corrected. Is this a common stereotype throughout our nation? What can I do to help myself and others overcome this challenge?

In the past, black people were typically directed into vocational tracks rather than college prep – if they were even given guidance at all. Now, the opportunities for black people have increased, and you can take whatever courses you like. Since this is a relatively recent change, non-blacks might find it different.
