It seems as though there is a rather large ‘neoconservative’ movement among some whites who seem to be completely unable to understand the extent of the gap in opportunities between whites and non-whites in the US. It seems these whites just don’t comprehend the full extent of their situation of being born into a position of priviledge because of their skin color. It may be a defensive reaction to the push for equality, as they may see their position of priviledge being threatened by measures that seek to level the playing field.
