It seems whenever a white person is rejected for a job, they will cry and complain of 'Affirmative Action,' even when no proof exists that this is so. If whites want blacks to stop 'playing the race card,' shouldn't they learn to stop playing the 'Affirmative Action' card? Can they not accept that a black person may have been chosen over them fair and square?

The ONLY way to erradicate this problem, is to abolish affirmative action and make blacks compete with whites on MERIT

Reality of it is that white people who complain about Affirmative Action and black people who complain about discrimination, neither really know the other's qualifications. But questions are raised when one of the top high school graduates in the nation gets denied admission to colleges in California, yet accepted at schools like Harvard does draw a lot of questions among whites. I don't have to worry about it in the military, we got promotion points.

It seems as though there is a rather large 'neoconservative' movement among some whites who seem to be completely unable to understand the extent of the gap in opportunities between whites and non-whites in the US. It seems these whites just don't comprehend the full extent of their situation of being born into a position of priviledge because of their skin color. It may be a defensive reaction to the push for equality, as they may see their position of priviledge being threatened by measures that seek to level the playing field.

i fully agree...i see it like this: don't complain to ME about affirmative action; complain to the racists who make it necessary.

What you are saying may be true, but I'd like you to consider some things. Would you like it if you believed a less qualified or competant person got a job ahead of you? Would you like it if a person with less to offer gets promoted before you? These seem to be equal gripes for both groups. However, more racism (including 'affirmative action') will never make up for nor prevent racism. There has to come a time when both sides say, 'Hey look, I forgive you,' and both sides stop keeping score. Someone has to make the first move in reconciliation. We must act upon our own good character, not react to the actions of others. Blaming racism or affirmative action fails to account for other reasons for what seems like discrimination. In the job example, nepotism might be a more likely culprit.

You have a kind of good point. Actually, here is an example. 'If you are a black student, and you have a low GPA, it will be much easier for you to get into prestigious schools than it will be for a very academically talented white person' That is the part of Affirmative action that bothers white people

First. I truely believe that the amaerican dream is alive and well..white people do not understand the day to day trials and tribs that the average african american goes through...They tend to live in thier republican neighborhoods and choose to view life through rose colored glasses.. instead of seeing the real world..as for what it really is and the good that they could be atleast partially responsible for improving.I have said for many years that if you cannot create good with it what good is it? beyond comfort and support, what realgood is money for?

Questions like this always get me. I mean fair is fair and the question seems almost sterotypical. First off it doesn't matter the color if one is treated unfairly they should complain about it. Not all blacks play the race card and neither do whites. When people learn to treat the person as an individual and not as a color then we would not care who plays what just as long as justice is served.

Amber, while I agree that many people who play the 'affirmative action card' are indeed often ignorent individuals who usually can't accept the fact that someone of a different race was actually more qualified than them, many individuals also have a legitimate complaint. I personally think affirmative action has been handled in the wrong way. Instead of focusing on color at all, we should be focused soley on experience and ability. Affirmative action only increases the differences and tensions between the races instead of trying to honestly unify everyone and make everyone equal.

It might be because it is true. I tested for a large surburban Police Department. I scored a 98 percent on the test. I ended up 31st on a list of 50 eligible to be hired. The reason? As a white male I received no 'bonus points'. If I had been a minority, I would have received 20 points. If I were a veteran, I would have received 15 points, and If I were a minority female I would have received 25 points. There was a maximum of 25 points allowed in all categories. There were people who were on the list with up to 114 percent. As a side note, all the people who scored 95 percent and above received no bonus points. We were not eligible. I was the first one offered a job. I turned it down. This department already had more than its share of minorities as far as demographics of the area were concerned. I went to another department with the same amount of minorities, but fair hiring practices. You figure out on which side of the stateline there are less troubles.

I'm with you on this one. When I teach freshmen college students about racism in American history, everything from lynchings to the slave trade to massacres of Natives to theft of land from both Natives and Mexicans to internment of Japanese Americans, I almost always immediately hear the ridiculous assertion, 'Why don't you tell us about all the bad things people of color have done to whites?' And the 'worst' they can come up with is Affirmative Action.

Never mind that Affirmative Action is mostly about gender, not race, and that it's helped white women more than any other group. Never mind that whites are protected under it, too. Never mind that there are white scholarships and quotas for them to go to historically black or Latino schools. Never mind that 'reverse racism' or 'losing jobs to less-qualified minorities' exists far more in their imagination than in reality. It is amazing to me how people from privileged backgrounds can do backflips and twists to invent how they supposedly have it 'just as bad as people of color used to' nowadays. I think this is all about 'respectable negrophobia' and fear of other non-whites as well, as Jody Armour says. It is all about finding a more subtle way of holding onto white privilege. The positive side of this is that I rarely hear that from older students of any ethnic background. It's mostly the most sheltered, still-living-at-home with the parents, never been out in the real world kids who make that kind of statement. Nontraditional (over 25) students rarely make that statement, I think, because they've seen how the real world works.

Please do not base your viewpoint on freshmen white guys. They do not know enough yet. Let them live awhile and then ask them. Affirmative Action is currently being abused ask anyone trying for an opening either in a job or school. I met young High School people from the inner-city doing summer work for the city as interns at various companies. My office had two bright young kids. They were black which is what the ethnicity of the innersity it made up so it was expected. They were good kids and I attended the graduation program for them at the end of the summer at the state university in the inner city. I was about the only white guy there. All of the speakers were black university professors and they all had the same message. Do not worry about what you read in the papers about a money shortage for universities in this state. It doesn't apply to you or us. There will be plenty of money for your education and you will get in when you apply. In other words affirmative action will ensure that you get in PERIOD! One of my students told me about the many times he had been to South Africa during previous summers. Does this sound like inner-city underprivileged kids? No, just black kids with a future assured at the expense of poor white kids. The playing field has been level for at least two genreations. Isn't it about time to help the poor white kids now? Please see what your freshm,an classes think about my viewpoint.

I've worked in a variety of jobs and have seen many people claim they are being discriminated against because they are black or because of affirmative action. In almost every case it seems that the person is wrong. People just naturally think the world is out to get them or are looking for an excuse for why they are not succeeding as much as they think they should be. I have one very close friend who has jumped from job to job because she encounters racism everywhere she goes. I finally realized that she was raised to believe that there would be racism everywhere in the world and therefore everywhere she goes, she finds racism. It is holding her back from reaching her real potential in corporate Amrica. She will not listen to reason on this subject.
