The press and conservative groups have given 'gay' a negative connotation. Just as Spam has been the laughing stock of luncheon meat byproducts and now is a familiar, negative term for junk e-mail, so has 'gay' taken the same path in the world of slang.

Your question is almost trying to fit homosexual relationships into this neat, tidy heterosexual box, but it's not an easy comparison to make. Homosexual relationships aren't an imitation of heterosexual relationships. We are not striving to 'fit' into this heterosexual scenario. For instance, my partner and I kind of 'switch' back and forth, so there's no definite line. In our case, our 'roles' depend on the task at hand, but even that is not a failsafe. While I have more masculine tendencies and my partner has more feminine tendencies, it's not something that is set in stone. We are two women who love each other, and the lines that define our roles are very fluid.

My two thoughts are: A) Many people do not understand the tendency of those who self-mutilate or injure themselves. Lack of understanding leads to fear, etc. B) I would say that the majority of people really wouldn't know where to start to help a person with these tendencies. Personally, I would suggest treatment, but I really wouldn't know what to do from there. I'm assuming your use of 'we' means that you do these things as well, so I have to turn some questions back to you then... Have you sought help from a professional who understands self-mutilation? Have you discussed with your friends and family the thoughts and reasons that you do these things?

Civilization and society have coddled those people who would have been wiped out by evolution ('the strongest will survive').

I've never heard of this trend. I would just assume you were a confused 'newby.' lol However, I have seen stickers that have variations of the rainbow and the word 'friendly' on them.

My partner has taught in an elementary, middle and high school. On one side, she has had no problems from parents, students, colleagues or administration. On the other side, her sexual orientation is neither apparent nor brought up... period. The question of sexual orientation only comes up when inquisitive students ask about whether she's married and personal questions of that nature, which she deftly dodges with a quick 'I'm not going to be one of the questions asked on the SAT' kind of response. We are located in Atlanta, so I'm not sure of any difference between a large or small population.

From what I understand, homosexuality is not looked highly upon by the various cultures in India and is pretty much a punishable 'sin.' There's an interesting movie that was released in 1996 called 'Fire' by Indian director Deepa Mehta. If you are able to get your hands on a DVD version, there is a fascinating documentary accompanying the film that can better answer your question.
