Different parts of each religion will have different takes on it - from not touching, to ignoring the religious rules as outdated and eating it anyway.

Look at it this way - it's to symbolize what should be (and should have been) freedom for all, and began a system which meant ~progress~ towards equality. (I know we're not there yet...) Or heck...hope you at least enjoy the day off and accompanying activities.

It's just not well publicized. Also, while ***THIS IS NOT A STATEMENT SAYING ANYONE DESERVES ANYTHING TO DO WITH TERRORISM*** they may be more in touch with the 'whys' of terrorist actions, but know full well if they express anything other than a 'They just are evil' viewpoint, they'll be viewed as saying they're on the terrorists' side.

No - but there are a variety of people here, and they come from many places, and Spanish is the primary language for many of these places. Many people ~are~ learning English, but it's simply easier for them to understand something - especially considering how this is usually for service functions. This also can be useful in helping to learn English, as there are usually primary instructions, such as on an ATM, in English so they can associate the Spanish instructions with the English ones. Additionally, in many areas (esp. major cities) there are entire communities that are centered on a particular non-Anglo-Saxon culture (Chinatowns, Spanishtowns, etc.). America is about freedom, not being homogenized.

The first word acts as an adjective, a modifier, to the subject of 'American.' This appropriately means that 'American' is the primary point of the statement. The identifiers have to do with the fact that these people do come from varied backgrounds and cultures, and differences should be celebrated. However, it does go overboard when the hyphen becomes everything.
