Where can we see any attempts by the larger Muslim community to condemn and/or curb the violent acts perpetrated in the name of their faith? Is it just not well-publicized?

You need to check out this web site http://www.cair.com/default.asp They are sponsoring a large drive now. Also, there is a new television station which starts around November 30, 2004. Bridge TV which will be Muslim oriented.

Why don't you ask this question of white southerners, who murdered and terrorized Black people? Ask them if they made any attempts to condemn or curb violent acts perpetrated in the name of THEIR faith?, during the time when blacks were being terrorized and murdered?

check out this website for info on muslim scholars condemning terrorism http://www.fatwa-online.com/worship/jihaad/jih004/index.htm if you complain about not hearing any muslims condemning terrorism, we are out there loud and clear, its just that we dont make many television appearances because images are forbidden in our religion(the ones you see on tv are either ignroant of the prohibition of images in islam, or know and dont care and are thus sinning) many muslims laymen and scholars alike condemn terrorism and those who perpetrate it..most of it is written...

Jolora, almost every national and international Muslim organization around the world has condemned 'terrorism' against innocent civilians, but, as you suspected our media purposefully does not relate it to keep the animosity and stereotype against Islam. Ex. Visit www.islamonline.net September 26, 2004 and see the Islamic Association of Muslim Scholars (IAMS) press release on condemning terrorism and ask why is our media not reporting it.

The Muslim community always tries to condemn the fanaticism but its just not covered by the media well enough. It's also because the Muslim community is, at the moment, divided. Hopefully, it might take some time, but we'll get on our feet quick enough and end the stereotypes and prejudices... HOPEFULLY :)

Good question. The fact is, Muslims were slow to be especially vocal condemning terrorism- this is because many Muslims in this country were afraid to say anything for fear of backlash. However, American Muslims have been increasingly vocal condemning such acts, but the condemnations don't seem to make it to CNN or FoxNews as efficiently as anti-Islam rhetoric does. If you go to the Council of American and Islamic Relations website, (CAIR) at www.cair-net.org, and do a search, you will find plenty of press releases condemning terrorist acts. There is also a petition floating around the internet signed by at least 100,000 Muslims condemning terrorist acts.

All this talk tying the Muslim faith to terrorism really irks me. How about Catholic terrorism? How about the Crusades or todays emphasis on disarming imaginary 'weapons of mass destruction.' In the words of every American president in my lifetime, 'God Bless America'

Why is there any association at all of Muslims and terrorism? You are very prejudiced to think that Muslims are violent or non-violent. You are very prejudiced to judge any religion for that matter. Why do you need to see any attempts by the larger Muslim community to condemn and curb the voilent acts perpetrated in the name of their faith? Just because a few idiotic blokes are really violent you don't need proof from their supposedly larger representative that what they're doing is wrong. Why, there are so many violent, noncongregated Catholics out there...why don't you say that you guys are not violent? Do you feel a need to...?

There are Muslims speaking out against violence. However, they are censured. Just think about what would happen to Bush's platform if Muslims started telling him he was wrong! God Bless, Courtney

Well, Jolora, I don't really know. Maybe you're right,..maybe it's just not publicized. Then again, maybe the majority of muslims see this as a true holy war which justifies any kind of behavior. Or, it could be that they are consciencious objectors who just don't want to get involved in all this violent nuttiness. Or, maybe most muslims operate under the axiom..'out of sight, out of mind.'

Why didn't the Christian churches come out to condemn the bombings of abortion clinics? Why didn't the church in Laramy (sp?) come out to condemn the murder of Matthew Shepard? Why hasn't the Vatican agologized for not doing anything about the Holocaust?

It's just not well publicized. Also, while ***THIS IS NOT A STATEMENT SAYING ANYONE DESERVES ANYTHING TO DO WITH TERRORISM*** they may be more in touch with the 'whys' of terrorist actions, but know full well if they express anything other than a 'They just are evil' viewpoint, they'll be viewed as saying they're on the terrorists' side.

I don't mean to offend anyone but I only know him as, Cat Stevens and he had the famous quote that the hijacers 'hijaced Islam'. Because of the racism many people don't want to hear Muslims speak and for that reason they A- don't get air time unless they're terroists, B- people avoid the ones that make public comments. Apart from the recent (last 5 or so years) racism/biggotry, Islamics have stayed in their own communities apart from everyone else (even the one who live in non-muslim countries like France). This 'volenteery Ghettoication' (so to speak) is common for most religions (like how every town in the bible belt is self-suffient and the children are warned not to leave city limits). The people who are violent do not fine everything they preach in religious text and their are hierarchy issues since one powerful religious leader attacks another religious leader (thus attacking the followers of this leader) and says they can't be listened to. Bin Lauden spent out a command for Ji-had and recently a powerful clergymen of Islam sent out the same kind of command against him. For this reason many people keep quiet because their is such confusion adn no one wants to be ex-communicated. I hope this is what you were looking for, I think I babbled a bit and I apoligize, I'm very tired right now.
