You're question is legit, but you've thrown in something that makes it almost impossible to answer. I would guess that the majority of folks who are against gay marriage (like me) do so primarily due to our religious convictions, therefore wouldn't be able to reply without that base. I guess it's a culture thing. The introduction of something unknown is always weird.

Why not reparations? The US Government paid the equivalent of reparations to Asians- and they weren't even enslaved! The effects of slavery/racism run deep and this generation of Blacks do still suffer from seeds of discrimination sewn ages ago. For instance, America's wealth of today was built on the backs of slaves. If not for slavery, there would be no Kennedy/Pulitzer/Rockefeller dynasty. Just as the wealth of those white families I just mentioned have passed down through the generations, reparations should be paid to the living descendants of slaves.

I think it's because we're living in a 'it's not my fault' society. I.E. 'I'm suing McDonalds because they made me fat' or 'I'm suing big tobacco because they encouraged me to smoke'. It's gotten beyond ridiculous. Telling someone to join Weight Watchers is too often seen as insensitive or uncompassionate instead of good advice. Unfortunately, at this writing, Medicare is considering listing obesity as a disease and our tax dollars may start sponsoring these weight reducing surgeries. As Americans, we're always looking for the easier way to do ANYTHING, therefore losing the objective of working hard to get what we want. Hence, the support of paying a salary to stay home & be fat instead of providing a gift certificate to a gym.
