Why do younger black people think they deserve reparations? What discriminations have they suffered? I agree that their grandparents might deserve them - yet they are the only ones who think the idea is foolish.

As a Caucasian male, I can only fool myself into thinking I know what kinds of discriminations others have faced. I think that it is (unfortunately) now part of our culture to think that one is entitled to compensation if you are wronged, as indicated by the number of lawsuits being filed everyday. There have also been some precedents set by Jewish groups getting reparations for the holocaust, and Native Americans getting reparations for past atrocities so I think that the hope is kept alive. The only problem I see with it is if there are leaders making false promises that reparations would be coming. I just don't see how it could be economically or logistically possible to ever see this happen.

To Jon, I do not believe that most young black people feel that they deserve slave reparations. To those who do I feel they think the world should bend over backwards for them and that they use black history as a excuse to not get off their lazy ass to earn a living and to self support themselves. A lot of them in my opinion could care less about how our ancestors suffered, the Civil Right Movement or Dr.Martin Luther King Jr., but as with anyone when the 'green paper' is involved they suddenly want to cry grief and pain for the suffering of other blacks. I am a young black female and I don't mind working to support myself and earning what I have. I don't want slave reparations because I've never lived in that era and it is arrogant to mooch off people because of what happened to people who lived centuries ago and whom you will never meet nor care to.

Why do you think that younger blacks share a monolithic viewpoint on this topic? BTW: If you think that racism & discrimination have disappeard-you are sadly mistaken.

Because the systems that denied Blacks opportunities for generations are still in place. Racism isn't as individualized and overt as in the past, but it's still present, although in many cases it's institutionalized. Imagine a certain company 'A' that, in the past, refused to hire graduates from a certain college because it was a historically black university. Today, no one associated with Company A is a racist, but the company still doesn't hire from the black university, only now the reason is 'We've never hired from there. It's simply not one of the venues we examine when looking for new hires...' In short, while I agree that there are opportunities available today that weren't in existence a generation ago, young Black people are still getting shafted. Moreover, Black youths are affected by the racism visited upon their parents and grandparents. For example, assume that in 1940 a young black man named William wanted to become a doctor, but the teacher at the local elementary refused to teach blacks. Thus, William is denied the chance to better himself and create a better life and more opportunities for his descendants. Instead, he's forced to become a sharecropper and his family stays mired in poverty. Then, rather than William it is his grandson William III who becomes the first in his family to go to college and even get a shot at being something other than a farmer. Basically, the racism of the past is still affecting Black America's youth today.

Do you think Paris Hilton or any other heir or heiress deserves his or her money based on the labor of their forefathers? Reparations, to me, is the samething. Slaves did not make a thing, so why not reward them by rewarding their ancestors. I do not mean issuing every single black person a check, by any means. However, the money could be used to donate towards worthy causes that would uplift lower income black people.

We live in a age where, everyone seems to be trying to get something for nothing. When anything goes wrong, the first thing people think of is who to sue. No one wants to take responsibility for their own actions.Common sense should tell them that there is no way we could afford to pay reparations, determine how much, and who

There should be no reparations ever made to anyone for past slavery in the US. There is no one alive that was ever a slave, and If you can find someone who was, well, I will give all kinds of money to see a 160 year old person! Obviously, my opinion does not apply to those slaves being used in underground sweatshops in this country.

Goes back to the old black habit of trying to get something for nothing. They think that whites owe them.

THAT IS AN AWFULLY GOOD QUESTION. I THINK THAT MOST BLACK PEOPLE AGREE THAT OUR ANCESTORS WE PRETTY MUCH ROBBED OF SOME THINGS, TO PUT IT MILDLY. BUT SIR, I ALSO BELIEVE IN REPARATIONS BECAUSE OUR ANCESTORS WERE PROMISED THAT. IN ADDITION, THE DAMAGE THAT WAS DONE IN SLAVERY, HAS CERTAINLY BECOME GENERATIONAL AND BEEN PASSED DOWN TO SOME OF THOSE YOUNG PEOPLE. ITS SORT OF LIKE IF YOUR PARENTS WERE AWARDED A LAWSUIT OR SETTLEMENT AND THE BENEFITS OF THE SETTLEMENT OUTLIVED YOUR PARENTS...ARE YOU ENTITLED TO THE INHERITANCE? YOU PROBABLY WOULD WANT THE INHERITANCE. THIS IS JUST MY RESPONSE TO WHY I THINK YOUNG PEOPLE WOULD LIKE REPARATIONS. I DO SEE THE NEED FOR IT IN MY COMMUNITY....NOW PERSONALLY, JESUS CHRIST PAID THE PRICE WITH HIS LIFE AND I AM COMPLETED SATISFIED WITH THAT. THANKS FOR YOUR QUESTION.

No, no african-american deserves reparations. This is for one simple reason: it's illegal. While I'm aware that we gave reparations to the japanese americans after world war 2 when we imprisoned them. However, that was illegal to begin with. Reparations for slavery would be an ex post facto punishment. A punishment now for crimes comitted when they weren't crimes. Besides, what about the people (like my family) who never held slaves, should we have to pay too?

young black people may have it a lot better than their grandparents did, but racism certainly still exists and is in fact very strong in many areas of the U.S. and Europe. As for reparations, I don't really know what to say. How can we make up for years of persecution suffered by a certain race or religion? I don't think we can because what's done is done, and I don't think money is ever the answer. But think about this: if you worked a job for years and years and your boss never paid you, you'd want that money, right? Of course, slavery involved much more cruelty than that. I might not think it would solve anything, but I wouldn't be against reparations if the government decided to give them. To me, the most important thing is that we overcome the ignorance and inequality that still exists in our society - and it does still exist in many insidious forms.

Many people, period, don't know the TRUE history of 'Negroes' in this country. If Black people, young and old, Black and White, knew about the 'long range, comprehensive, economic plan' to create and develop a 'social being called the Negro;' I believe they would reassess the validity of Reparations for desendants of African slaves who built this country for the pleasure of the Europeans. In my opinion, the Willie Lynch economic plan is reason enough for Reparations. Go to karlawithak.net and click on the Willie Lynch link to educate yourself and others. I personally feel the same but to give you an answer from a black person perspetive, think of it this way. If you just lost your job, had a family of five, and took your last $100 and bought lottery tickets, won hundreds of million dollars adn died the next day. Your family will not continue to receive your winnings. All they did not receive initially they will not. That's not right, is it. Especially since the ticket buyer spent their last in the tickets. Well although young people did not suffer the same things their grand, great grand,(and so on) suffered their grandparents are still owed something. If they were given what they deserved in the beginning (40 acres and a mule) then reparations would not be necessary. Nothing could change the past, however give to those what they are due. And no on lives forever, so if the person who encountered the hardships has perished then pass it on to their families. Message rushed through but I hope you understood my point and dialect.
