Gillian D.MemberDress what way, exactly? In something other than a potato sack? If a woman is considered reasonably attractive, men seem to think it’s OK to make the most awful comments, hand gestures, whatever, regardless of the way she’s dressed. That’s not nature – that’s societal conditioning. I’ve known men who honestly believe a woman should consider herself complimented if a stranger yells ‘nice ass!’ as she’s crossing the street, or whatever. That’s not complimentary – that’s scary, and rude in the extreme.

Gillian D.MemberI lock my door and/or tighten my grip on my children/purse when a man of any color approaches me, and a lot of my friends feel the same. I knew a black man who was 6’4″, 250 lbs. who was running through the parking lot of a shopping mall in the rain with the hood of his jacket pulled over his head. He almost ran right into a woman walking into the mall. When she recoiled in fear, he naturally assumed it was because he was black. When I pointed out that 1). he had his head covered, 2). he’s enormous; and 3). this was a woman alone, he had to agree it was gender over color – in that instance, anyway. Many women are leary or outright afraid of strange men, regardless of their color.
