ErikaMemberI’m resonding to your message because I know exactly what you’re talking about… and this is because I’m from New Jersey. Maybe it’s just a localized New Jersey thing but it is true. A LOT of our gas stations, convenience stores are run by Pakistanis/Indians. In the town where I grew up we used to speak with the man and he told us that he’s from Pakistan, etc. Why? I don’t know. But at least in many parts of New Jersey, it’s true.

ErikaMemberWhite ‘celebs’ with unusual names, such as Apple, etc., are not the norm of white society. Period. Actresses, actors, singers, etc., are very creative people with creative in-the-spotlight lives, and they are often trend-setting. I think person who started this thread was thinking more about the mainstream tendency of african-americans to have unusual names– which is more common than white people in the mainstream. And yes in the general public you’ll find a white person with a name like ‘star’ or ‘sage’, etc., however for those individuals being maybe 15% of the whites in the population, in the african-american population, those with names like ‘Shaniqua’, ‘Laniquita’, ‘LaShonda’, etc., make up a higher percentage of the regular population– not celebrity, etc. I don’t think any of us ‘whites’ mean to criticize the names or the parents, but some people may wonder what is prompting these unusual names for people who are born in this country.
