John W.ParticipantWhy do so many Indians and Pakistanis run motels, gas stations and convenience stores?

LeahParticipantI don’t know why but I sure wish they would keep them clean; if the store is nasty, you know that’s who runs it around here. I do not go to places that are run by these people.

Teresa19705ParticipantI’m not Indian or Pakistani, nor do I know anyone who owns a hotel or gas station, but I have noticed that many people from the subcontinent own businesses like these, and also fast-food restaurants and others. But I must say that owning such businesses makes a lot of sense. People from all walks of life need gas for their car and need to eat and sleep. These business owners are very smart to buy these sorts of places.

CLParticipantIt’s because they are willing to put in the hard yakka to run a 24 hour store, they are willing to put up with the risks of being robbed at night and they are happy to do long shifts. They are just hard workers who don’t mind working hard for their money. Plus, they sometimes lack the communication skills required for other jobs.

AnonParticipantI attend a pretty well known college in New England ( USA) and find that most of the middle eastern/indian people are concentrated in the science and math departments. Especially medicine and pharmacy . It’s getting to the point where people are starting to stereotype them as ‘math know-it-alls’ just like Asians. I believe the people you are refering to are poor immigrants (notice most of them dont really know English) that do what they know best to survive: own some sort of business. Asian families do this as well. Then they send their kids to good schools so that they can get ahead. So you see them, but you almost never see thier kids.

ErikaParticipantI’m resonding to your message because I know exactly what you’re talking about… and this is because I’m from New Jersey!!!! Maybe it’s just a localized New Jersey thing but it is true. A LOT of our gas stations, convenience stores are run by Pakistan/Indian. In the town where I grew up we used to speak with the man and he told us that he’s from Pakistan, etc. Why? I don’t know. But at least in many parts of New Jersey, it’s true.

sMemberWhy not?…some convenience store can make over $60,000 a year with enough hard work. Some hotels probably profit a quarter million or more. I would know, I know relatives including my parents who do the same.
