‘Nobody will try to harrass you sexually unless you invite it yourself.’ This reflects an attitude I found prevalent in India: blaming the woman for a man’s unacceptable behavior. In the United States it is believed that no matter what a woman wears, a man has no right to force unwanted sexual acts on her. It seems you believe that simply buying something in a store, walking down the street, entering your hotel room with your friends, or simply stating your nationality is ‘inviting on yourself’ having your crotch groped or your ass slapped. This happened to me and my friends, and I also witnessed Indian men doing the same to Indian women. My Indian women friends also hate this behavior of some of the men. A group of my friends were in the North during a festival. The other tourists had left because the locals had warned them they would be sexually harassed the next day if they stayed, but these friends arrived too late for the warning. The girls were very upset about the way they were violated. Perhaps you don’t see this problem because you are neither female nor a foreigner. I stand by my advice.

I have a similar body size (5’7 and 1/2′ and 128 lb). I think maybe you feel bad about how you look because of cultural ideals of beauty. Sometimes I feel bad because I’m not curvy like the Mexican ideal. There’s really nothing to do about that but try to not value yourself on physical appearance. My advice to you about bulking up is to make sure you are eating enough calories each day and getting good nutrition, and also to try to exercise using martial arts or ballet. These are good ones because they work your whole body in a balanced way (especially ballet) and make your muscles bigger (I noticed martial arts bulks up your thighs and arms, while ballet makes your legs and butt bigger). At the same time I think these are better than weight training because you are focusing on improving your dance/martial arts skills instead of changing your body. Your body changes without your really trying. I hope these also help you feel better about your body as much for what it can do as for how it looks, which is what they did for me.

People will always be asking ‘what country?’ Unless they are people your boyfriend introduces you to, don’t tell them. If you tell people, they’ll try to cheat you, and if they’re male, they’ll also sexually harass you. If you get inappropriately touched, the best thing is to tell the person you are offended, or yell at them. Don’t let them get away with it so they’ll treat other foreigners the same way. It doesn’t matter what you wear, if people know you’re a foreigner and they’re not educated about other cultures, they will sexually harass you, so try not to go anywhere without your boyfriend.

A Chicano or Chicana is someone who has indigenous blood. It comes from the word for the Aztec nation, the Mexica. This is where Mexico’s name comes from as well. Chicano can also be spelled Xicano. You can find out more from asking members of M.E.Ch.A. (Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan). Latino is someone of Latin descent, whatever that means. M.E.Ch.A. says it’s a racist word first used by the French for people with darker skin. Among people who are aware of what Chicano means and who have indigenous blood, it is preferred because the other terms like Hispanic and Latino ignore our indigenous heritage. We’re proud of who we are and don’t need to pretend we’re white.
