What is the difference between a Chicana and a Latina? Also, are there equivalent words for men?

A Chicana is a woman of Hispanic/Latin heritage who was born in the United States. A Latina is someone born in Latin America. The names are the same for men, except they would be 'Chicano' and 'Latino.'

Chicana or Chicano, in a strict sense, is a Mexican American, a son of Mexicans born in the United States. A Latina or Latino is a person born in a Latin American country (from México to Argentina) or born anywhere in the world but having Latin parents or ascendants in general. I'm of European descent, born in Venezuela and therefore Latin, but I'm not Chicano.

A Chicano is a person of Mexican heritage who was born and raised in the United States. 'Chicana' is the female version. It is a word a person must choose for themselves, as it entails a political stance and a strong love for culture and 'la raza' (the people). It also means focusing less on the 'Hispanic' identity and more on the Native American identity, as the vast majority of Mexicans are of indigenous or mixed indigenous heritage. The most commonly accepted origin of the word is the following: white farmers used to derogitarily call the Indians brought in from northern Mexico to work the fields 'Chicanos' or 'Shicanos' because they couldn't pronounce the 'x' in 'Mexicano.' Mexican-Americans already established in the United States also referred to the incoming wave of immigrants as 'Chicanos', and eventually this slur was turned into a badge of pride. However, many today feel weary of this designation because it excludes Central Americans, South Americans and those of the Carribean. Yet in the Southwest and in California, where persons of Mexican descent are the vast majority of the Latino population, the term is still widely used.

A Chicano or Chicana is someone who has indigenous blood. It comes from the word for the Aztec nation, the Mexica. This is where Mexico's name comes from as well. Chicano can also be spelled Xicano. You can find out more from asking members of M.E.Ch.A. (Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan). Latino is someone of Latin descent, whatever that means. M.E.Ch.A. says it's a racist word first used by the French for people with darker skin. Among people who are aware of what Chicano means and who have indigenous blood, it is preferred because the other terms like Hispanic and Latino ignore our indigenous heritage. We're proud of who we are and don't need to pretend we're white.
