When I was in high school (late ’60s and early ’70s), the prevailing thoughts that I got from my parents, teachers and even the school counselors was that in order to go to college, my grades had to be no less than a B average and it would be very expensive. Student aid and other programs, like 2-year schools that offered basic classes that could help an average student move into the college experience, were not discussed. The fact is many average students were aimed at the ‘trades’ and not college. My parents did not know better and the schools did not do much to enlighten us.

College may not guarantee that you will be sucessful, but that degree gives you many options that a person without a degree has. I have worked with executives that held degrees that had nothing to do with their positions, but they would have not been considered for those positions if they did not have a degree. EX: A manufacturing plant manager with a biology degree.

I take it that you don’t listen to NPR much. If you did, you would not have written what you did. I am not rich or female. I find that NPR gives a balanced view of issues, interviewing people from many sides of an isssue. This is much better than the AM radio ‘talk shows’ that are quite forcibly right wing and many times cruel.
