CrystalMemberI don’t think blacks have a monopoly on being loud and rude at the movies. I’ve had the unfortunate experience of sitting next to loud whites, Asians and Latinos. Rude knows no color, nor does polite. I really think there is more of a problem with not knowing how to behave at movie theaters these days due to the prevalence of VCRs and DVDs. People are so used to watching movies in the privacy of their own homes, being able to comment as much and as loudly as they please, I think they forget how to behave while seeing movies in public places. It ticks me off no end (that and cell phones ringing in the theater!) but it’s not unique to blacks.

CrystalMemberThere was a study done in the 1980’s by a well-known feminist anthropologist, Peggy Reeves Sanday. She surveyed some 95 tribal cultures. Of those cultures, 47% were ‘rape free’ cultures in which rape was very rare, and severely censured when it occurred. Only 18% of the cultures Sanday studied were ‘rape prone’ cultures, where sexual violence was the norm. Sanday concluded – and I agree – that men are not ‘natural born rapists.’ Rather, the culture in which one grows up influences one’s attitudes toward love, sex, and relationships. Men who grow up in cultures where women are respected and powerful do not rape.

CrystalMemberA white American woman named Liza Dalby became a geisha in Japan in the 1970s and wrote a book about her experiences, called ‘Geisha.’ (It’s a very good book and well worth reading.) So apparently the answer is ‘yes’ – if a non-Japanese woman can immerse herself in the culture and find a geisha to take her under her wing, as Dalby did.

CrystalMemberI don’t think all women are as ‘picky’ as you describe. However, those who are extremely selective are that way because they can be. More and more women are getting college degrees and good jobs, and buying houses on their own. We don’t need to get married in order to support ourselves or be accepted socially, the way it was in the ‘good old days.’ Therefore more women are putting greater stress on the intangibles in relationships. Also consider exactly who is ‘advertising’ for a relationship. Those who are physically attractive and economically successful, whether male or female, are often extremely choosy because they can afford to be; the attractive and successful can pretty much get anyone they want, so they set their standards higher than the more average among us.
