CarlParticipantThe media counterstereotype of the wise black arbiter of justice/role model/leader has been around for awhile and is becoming pretty ubiquitous. It has been manufactured by the entertainment industry in order to offset the current stereotypes of minorities which have arisen over time empirically. Also, it seeks to assuage white guilt and pander to blacks. I find it grating personally because of the self-conscious and self-congratulatory way in which it is carried out. Regardless of which minority it seeks to elevate, it always falls flat. For instance: How many People’s Court-type shows are on TV that have a black judge? There’s at least five of them! In commercials as well, I notice a lot of black and female bosses with white male underlings. Nothing wrong with that, of course, except for the glaring divagation with reality. I remember Morgan Freeman played the President of the United States in a movie awhile back. That was pretty laughable too. Anyway, for all that Hollywood seeks to improve minorities’ image with whites vis-a-vis mass media, they can’t fight reality.

CarlParticipantThough not an expert on Japanese culture, I was fortunate enough to have a Japanese roommate in college. Through him I learned many things about Japan and the Japanese, one of which happens to be that white skin among females is highly prized. This is because high-status women did not do manual labor outside in the sun. Ainu-Japanese women are considered especially attractive because of their Caucasian features.

CarlParticipantOf course the question to a woman will be, ‘Do you have a boyfriend?’ Heterosexuality is the norm, after all, and is much more prevalent than homosexuality (last I read it was 97% to 3%). It may be frustrating in your case, but be realistic: you represent a tiny minority. Society cannot conform to the opposing whims and desires of marginal groups. If society’s standards do not apply to you, that is your cross to bear. People are not being intentionally offensive, so you’ll just have to deal with it.

CarlParticipantI think that you are definitely experiencing sexual feelings, but have either a self-imposed mental impediment or a natural physical indifference to sex. Some people have stronger libidos than others: you must not have raging hormones. There is absolutley nothing wrong with you or what you do. Every human has their own uniquely tailored approach to sex. Hopefully one day you will experience all that sex has to offer, but in the meantime you are wise to regard sex on your own terms, and not those of anyone else.

CarlParticipantWhen a straight person uses the word ‘gay’ as a pejorative, it has nothing to do with literal homosexuality. It arises because of an ingrained negative connotation between ‘gay’ and ‘bad’. Calling a movie gay, is simply calling it bad. True, this perpetuates anti-gay feeling, if only at a subconcious level, but it is a word that is resolutely entrenched in the American lexicon(and also, evidently, in many other places). I think that if you are offended by the word’s usage, you should not employ it or associate with those who do. This way you will minimize your exposure to it. BTW, many people use ‘gay’ without thinking of its etymology. They think of it as being synonymous with bad or abnormal, and are not being intentionally homophobic. Just like an American will use the phrase ‘going to the bathroom’ to signify an action completely divorced from the literal meaning!

CarlParticipantHere the operative qualifier is ‘some’ white people. I believe that the thinking behind the ‘go back to where you came from’ comment, is that if a person cannot abide by the societal norms of the USA, which, let’s face it, are Anglo, then that person should take their antisocial behavior to their country of origin. Some whites feel entitled to say that it is ‘their’ country because it was founded by whites, who in turn devised all the institutions that have kept the USA and its democracy vibrant for two centuries. Racial chauvinism perhaps, but also perhaps patriotism and a desire to maintain unity and integrity. It is also my experience that the targets of anti-immigrant ire come in all shades of colour and tend to be the most recent ones off the boat, so to speak. Lastly, even Indians are immigrants to this country, so they deserve no special consideration. I think that crime afflicts and is perpetrated by people at the bottom of the socioeconomic spectrum and most people realize this. If one race has a acquired a stereotype for committing crime, then there must be some truth to it, otherwise it would not become a stereotype. The reasons why the race has acquired the stereotype, e.g. large number of poor, inadequate education, etc., are the factors that truly matter, but are certainly a subtext that some people will not consider when making a judgment.
