CalMemberIt always amazes me when people assume that passign a law to ban guns would significantly reduce violence. We already have laws against killing each other. As you noted, we ignore these laws with amazing frequency. I imagine we would ignore the laws banning firearms just as readily. Even if we were somehow successful in removing handguns from every home in America, we would just force the criminals to use whatever weapons remained available. I would rather take my chances with a .38 pistol than a 12 guage shotgun. We seem to forget that we were slaughtering each other in great numbers before the invention of gun powder and firearms. Baning firearms would simply make the killing less efficient and messier.

CalMemberI can’t understand why you would want to have two checking accounts. Seems like more hassle to me. Why have two accounts when one will do? I can’t imagine why anyone else would care. Maybe people think that having two accounts is a sign of distrust or selfishness.

CalMemberWe, the breeders, are pissed because you are getting off too easy. While we are staying up nights with a sick kid, you’re out partying. While we are dropping a couple grand on the kid’s braces, you are on vacation in Cancun. My kids will someday be paying for your social security but you never bothered to produce a replacement taxpayer for yourself.

CalMemberWhen you say everyone is called upon to help support those children, you don’t seem to take into account that everyone will also benefit from those children. The money you pay in taxes to support education is nothing compared to the money and time that parents spend raising children. Yet, childless people benefit from other people’s children every day. Think of all of the goods and services that you consume. Unless you are a hermit, they were supplied by other people’s children. If you ever collect social security, it will be paid for (mostly) by other peoples’ children. If a childless person wants to be free of the ‘burden’ of paying for education, that’s fine as long as they agree to pay a surcharge for all goods and services provide by other peoples’ children and agree never to accept social security benefits. What about resource consumption? Let’s assume that the average American consumes as much as 742 Ethiopians. So what? The average American worker is probably thousands of times more productive than some Ethiopian subsitance farmer. I don’t think everyone should go out and have six kids, but the occasional large family merely offsets all the people who chose not to have children. The only thing you said that made sense was promoting adoption. Maybe you should try it.

CalMemberIt’s not that there are too many people, it’s that they are not propoerly distributed. It often seems that the people who are least able to provide for their children have the most kids. But as long as they can adequately provide for their family, why should you care? The US may grow 40% over the next 45 years, but it’s not because we are having too many babies. The fertility rate of native born Americans is actually falling and is currently just above rate needed to maintain the population at current levels. The reason the US population continues to grow is because of imigration and longer life spans. If you eliminated imigration and you limited families to a maximum of 2 children, you would not achieve zero population growth, you would have a drastic decline in population due to the fact that so many people have only one or no children. Several Western European countries (including those ‘religiously brainwashed’ Catholic Italians)already have negative population growth. These countries will soon have trouble supporting their elderly pensioners because there will not be enough young workers paying into the social welfare system. When you see a large family, remember that you are looking at the future workers, taxpayers, and service providers that will keep you going in your old age. The best part is you get to benifit from them and someone else is doing all the work raising them. All you have to do is kick in a little tax money for schools. That’s nothing compared to the hours and dollars their parents provided. So, count your blessings and quit your bitching. By the way, I only produced two children in my lifetime.
