Betty BlueMemberI am in southern california, and in my area a disproportionate number of poor are black and latino. When I taught at an inner city Junior High (about 6 years ago), there was a feeling among a lot of students that because they weren’t white males, they couldn’t get the good jobs/big houses so they weren’t interested in trying. I hope that with more ethnic role models in high places that kids will change their attitudes. Will be interesting to see what effect the slow but systematic dismantling of affirmative action will have on our youth. Will they prosper or decline in a ‘color-blind’ society?

Betty BlueMemberA lot of sex-ed is/was just basic anatomy, the mechanics of sex, maybe some discussion of birth control and disease. I’d guess that they never learned these things to begin with. I wish more men’s magazines would cover simple issues like this, including how to pleasure and not hurt your partner. Women’s magazines sure do.

Betty BlueMemberLooking at women and their bodies in porn is aesthetically more pleasing than looking at men’s…unfortunately many straight porn men are not that attractive. Also, straight sex is familiar to you, lesbian sex is not, and there is often something desirable about the unknown, or in your case, watching the unknown. FYI, I am a lesbian who likes gay porn, so you’re not alone in enjoying watching something different than your actual preference.

Betty BlueMemberI think this mostly happens when men think there are other men around who they want/need to compete with. Also, it might be territorial, telling other men to back off, which just sets up more challenge. I used to have a straight male roommate who was very mellow and low key, and usually listened to music on headphones. But his voice and electronics immediately got louder when other guys came over. It sounded like they were trying to out-noise each other. I really think it is just another version of one-upsmanship.

Betty BlueMemberFrom your letter, it seems that you are attracted to feminine appearance, and many male-to-female transsexuals look as much (or more) like traditional women than many women do. Being attracted to transsexuals doesn’t mean you are gay. You’re still attracted to the feminine aspect of a person. Consider getting acquainted with a few (refer to them as ‘she’ or ‘her’ unless they request otherwise). And if sex becomes an issue, you can simply say you aren’t interested.

Betty BlueMemberI went through this with my best friend (straight male). It’s a habit for some people. I told him to knock it off. I know he’s kidding, but other people might not, and he could wind up getting his hiney kicked if he said it at the wrong place and time, so he could practice watching his mouth by not saying that stuff to me. If your friend makes any comments like ‘they wouldn’t do that,’ or anything else implying gays are weak or complacent, then maybe his comments are not just out of habit. I’ve also told my friend that I won’t bring him around any of my gay friends if he makes comments like that, so he knows he’s isolating himself from my life with those comments.
