Hi Emily ... I like the fact that my generation has at least some connection with yours through music. I admit to listening to new, alternative music. I remember to having NO musical connection to MY parents! To them, modern was Lawrence Welk! I think that some similar tastes in music can lead to discussion and understanding between generations that we have not had before. Rock On!

Perhaps I misunderstood your post ... but I read it to say that everyone should be Christian. I am more in favor of saying we don't need religion at all rather than to say that everyone should be Christian!! Especially in the US where we have the freedom to believe, or not believe, as we please. If you post meant to ask if all CHRISTIANS could have the same 'religion' and that different 'religions' weren't necessary within Christianity, good idea, but good luck. There is too much 'power' in religion by expounding exclusive ideas and you won't find those in power willing to give it up. You might try asking the pope to start though.

She probably couldn't. But, could a 5'5', 120 lb male carry the same load as his 6' even 180 pound counterpart? I don't think so. But, could a 5'9' 150 lb woman carry the same as her 5'9' male counterpart. I know she can. Cause I've been there, done that.

Perhaps they have high standards and don't think that anyone -- including the president of the United States -- should be above the law.

As a member of the media, albeit in a very small market, I don't think most media personnel are necessarily liberal. I feel they pretty much reflect society's mix. However, in order to do the job, a media person must be able to report on all ideas and all cultures, no matter his or her personal beliefs. They should be a mirror for what is happening. That can lead to the perception that they are 'liberal' as opposed to 'conservative.' If you knew these people, because many of them are, to use the old term, WASPs, you may find them quite conservative. They are just good at their jobs. Note: In this, I refer to reporters/anchors, not columnists/editorial writers, whose job it is to present their opinions.

We host exchange students. This is really their moment. Most are European and have learned British English. Several years ago, one young man went to school, leaned over in class and asked the young lady next to him if he could borrow her 'rubber.' To him, in British, he was asking for an eraser. In American (for those unfamiliar with our slang), a rubber is a male's device for preventing pregnancy. Definitely an embarrassing moment. From now on, I try and remember to warn our students NOT to do that!

I've met a few Finns - high school foreign exchange students mostly (plus a pen pal). My general impression is that Finland is a highly educated and technological society, but somewhat insular. The other biggest cultural thing I've noticed was an attitude about the Soviet Union (now Russia) which, considering border problems over the past few centuries, is quite understandable. I've also discovered Finns have a hard time with Kansas' 100-plus degree heat. I think the biggest image most Americans have of Finland, though, would be reindeer.
