Why do seated women move their legs up and down?

It’s a nervous habit, like men bouncing their legs while watching football or playing a video game. It could be a come-on if it was done in a sexy way with an obvious smile, but probably it is not.

It’s called fidgeting. In other words, it does not provide sexual stimulation. I’ve seen both genders do it. Men who cross their legs often shake the top foot, much like a woman might. The only difference is that a man does not cross his legs the way a woman does.

Pete, let me ask you: Is there anything, anything else at all, that might have caught your attention over all those years up there in Wisconsin?

As females we are expected to cross our legs when we sit down. As professionals we are often required to sit for extended periods of time. The movement of our foot, or the leg crossed over the top, helps stave off the discomfort caused by pressure points. The weight of a woman’s leg (no matter her body weight) causes pressure primarily on the underside of the top leg and the ‘outside’ of the lower leg just below the knee where the calf rests, slowing circulation. Moving it frequently allows us to sit for a longer period of time until we need to recross our legs in the other direction. It had never occurred to me that men might see that as a sexual motion.

I’ve never noticed that. But, if by some weird chance it provides sexual stimulation, then good for them. What a great way to get through a dull party, date or whatever.

In my experience, women do this for two reasons: One, they don’t like sitting completely still, and two, to get a male’s attention.

Sometimes it’s just boredom, sometimes it’s a nervous energy thing (like when people consistently bounce one leg up and down when seated). I remember way back in Junior High we talked about it being a blood-circulation thing – an involuntary movement caused by the passage of blood through the leg.

Are you sure it’s not just something you (as a man) notice more in women? I think this is something people of both sexes do. So far as the ankle is concerned, pivoting or making circular motions relaxes the ankle and leg – eases the muscles, etc – it’s a comfort thing!

It’s a nervous habit, something I do when I’m bored. I also twist or play with my hair, or clean my fingernails in the same situations. It has nothing whatsoever to do with ‘sexual stimulation’.

It has absolutely nothing to do with sexual stimulation. It’s more like tapping your foot, drumming your fingers or any other personal fidget. Swinging (or pivoting) one’s foot, or bouncing one’s leg, also facilitates blood circulation to the lower leg, thus preventing the dreaded tingling of a foot that’s ‘fallen asleep.’

It’s not just women. My brother does it, too, and it drives me crazy when I’m seated at the same table as him. I think it’s just a nervous habit – I used to do it all the time before I was diagnosed with (and treated for) an anxiety disorder. Maybe fewer men do it because they’re socialized not to display things like nervousness. Incidentally, the jiggling supposedly also boosts your metabolism somewhat – like constant, low-level exercise.

I generally move my foot around because I’m bored, or because my shoe is falling off. And if I’m wearing shorts or a short skirt, I generally move my leg because my legs are sticking together. I think men may be less likely to do that because when they cross their legs, it tends to be with the ankle at the opposite knee, which is a more stable position. The few men I know who sit with a more closed cross-legged position tend to fidget just as much as many women do.

I do it when I’m nervous. I’ve seen articles in women’s magazines that tout it as a lure and I find that seriously difficult to believe. I think most women do it when they’re bored or uncomfortable. It’s akin to cracking your knuckles or tapping your fingers.

When I do it, I’m either: a) bored, and it is the equivalent of tapping one’s fingernails, b) trying to keep my foot from falling asleep, or c) having a nervous tic.

I’m kind of a fidgety person, and it’s just a nervous habit. My Mom does it, too- she calls it her aerobics.
