elizabethParticipantMaybe they are trying to make conversation. It’s common practice to comment about another person’s family. If you have two or three kids, you get ‘what lovely children.’ If your family is considered out of the ‘norm’ of 2.5 kids, people feel they must remark on how unusual it is, or make a joke to cover up what they are REALLY thinking. If you have one, you get ‘when are you having more?’ to cover for ‘are you having problems getting pregnant?’ Whereas when you get comments about having a large family, people are probably thinking, ‘in this overpopulated world full of unwanted children, and with the costs of college education rising exponentially every year, what in the world are you thinking?’
