I can’t seem to say this enough: ANAL SEX NEVER HAS TO HURT. If you don’t like the discomfort, it’s easily avoided. Take it slow slow slow, starting off with fingers, and TOO MUCH LUBE IS PROBABLY NOT ENOUGH. Use the whole bottle if you have to. And it’s a good idea to make sure you’re, ah, ’empty’ before the proceedings. Also, like J.T. said, a lot of gay men (SWEAR TO GOD) don’t like anal sex. It’s funny how confused and incredulous some folks are when told that. ‘But..then…how…duh?’

People tend to follow accents and speech patterns they’re exposed to. Some are more prone to this than others. If I am talking to someone who has a different accent than mine, or uses different slang, I often can’t help imitating them. I don’t do it on purpose, and it’s embarassing when I catch myself doing it (or when someone else has to point it out to me, like the British guy who thought I was English too.)

While I can’t speak to ‘mainstream views,’ it might interest you to know that male-on-male erotica (of a soft core, Red Shoe Diaries sort) marketed specifically for women is a huge industry in Japan. There are also romance comics for girls about gay men, and plenty of gay (and simply androgynous) characters in popular cartoons. A Japanese soap opera I’ve seen recently called Kinpachi Sensei takes place in a middle school. One of the students is a flamboyantly gay male who hangs out with the girls and doesn’t seem to suffer much persecution. Another student, a girl, was rumored to be a lesbian in one episode and stopped attending school to avoid bullying. I can’t say if this indicates that gay men in Japan are better tolerated than women (the boy on the show might just have been gutsier,) but if so it would be an interesting inversion of American attitudes.
