Tim RobinsonMemberThank you for responding as you have. As an HIV Prevention educator, I agree. The fact is, HIV is more prevelant amoung Heterosexuals. We here more about it amoung Homosexuals because the gay movement has been at the forefront of making sure HIV issues are adressed. They have put themselves in the media to draw attention to the disease. We owe gratitude to our gay friends. As for promiscuity… gays have never had the rights aforded to straights. Therefore, as a self discovering homosexual, historically there have been no place except for bars, parks and other dark places to meet other gays. Think about it… if you thought you were gay in the 80’s or earlier, where would you go to meet other gays who identify with you. O.K. Since there were no healthy places to meet, and society said it was a bad thing to be, low-self-esteem created barriers to healthy relationships. Therefore, relationships do not lost long. The same is true today. Solution… Create Safe / Healthy environments for people to talk about their differences. This fosters a healthy self-esteem, which leads to healthier relationships, and less promiscuity. Caution… This is true for gays and straights alike. Mental Health and Physical Health go hand in hand. It is nearly impossible to add unhealthy substances and maintain these two ‘healths’ at the same time. Oh, I almost forgot… most of my HIV clients are heterosexual. Both the men and women share their experiences with multiple partners, some of them in the triple didgets… Please, play safe!
