Tammie M.Participant‘We’ African Americans can take darn near any derogatory thing and turn it around. Where I’m from, they call the shirts ‘wife beaters’ or ‘white T’s’, termed from so-called, (hick, trailer-trash, drunk, greasy, white guys beating their wives while wearing, you guessed it, a white t-shirt). We took that derogatory image and turned it into a fashion statement.

Tammie M.ParticipantI am very disappointed with what we tend to name our children. Some of us don’t realize that it may cripple our children’s future in the workforce. No matter how much we want to believe it’s equal out there, it’s not, and a lot of times we are judged or discriminated against by our names, even before they see our faces or qualifications. I named my child an afrocentric name (Ashanti, from the African tribe – it has several meanings). Yes, they’ll know she’s black, but at least she can spell it.
