You are so right. I have relatives who are prejudiced and are stupid that way. But I believe for some it is a fear of diluting their own culture and identity. It’s also fear of ridicule by others and weakness that makes people act the way my family does. I wonder how people get by hating(or do they?). I have a teenaged daughter who is so hurt by our relatives nasty remarks when she listens to rap. It is not even all she listens to. I have always encouraged my kids to be open minded. I believe in cultivating our own unique individuality and music is part of it- all genres. When ever I listen to so called ‘black’ music like R&B ‘they’ make fun of me too. Interesting how many of them listen to ‘old school’ music or love the Blues/Jazz and Motown performed by blacks and think it is great. We are mainly of white Irish and German descent (with different spices sprinkled all in-but think they admit to it?) Nearly everyone in our extended family is prejudiced. That to me is the saddest state to live in. They still talk about me since they learned I dated a black man. As for being white and well mannered-My friend is well mannered, better educated, has a higher standard of living and has a better attitude than any of them ever will.
