Julia27015ParticipantWhy is it that when a white kid listens to rap and talks ‘ghetto,’ they are accused of acting black, and when a black kid talks proper and dosen’t listen to hip hop they are accused of acting white? Are people saying that only African Amercans can talk ghetto and only white kids can be well-mannered?

Dan31701ParticipantFrom my observations, black kids who act ‘white’ are seen as deviating from their own kind, and for choosing ‘white’ as being preferrable to ‘black.’ In the case of white kids acting ‘black’, they are seen as trying to be something they’re not. A kid who grows up in a polished upper-middle class suburb is certainly not going to be speaking Ebonics and walking with a strut from early childhood. However, there used to be this one guy up the street from me named Sam. He’s a white guy but he grew up in Harlem, and I guess he managed to fit in because he had black mannerisms and style. When he came over here he fit right in with all the black kids at my old school.

Alyssa31473ParticipantYou must never be around black kids that do ‘act’ white. Within their culture and friends and family, they are teased and ridiculed for acting white. Although white acting black people do for some reason succeed. For example. while Will Smith may still be blackl and act the way, the only way thye can ‘fit’ in is to act the norm. Colin Powell is another example of acting white

Shelly27964ParticipantYou are so right. I have relatives who are prejudiced and are stupid that way. But I believe for some it is a fear of diluting their own culture and identity. It’s also fear of ridicule by others and weakness that makes people act the way my family does. I wonder how people get by hating(or do they?). I have a teenaged daughter who is so hurt by our relatives nasty remarks when she listens to rap. It is not even all she listens to. I have always encouraged my kids to be open minded. I believe in cultivating our own unique individuality and music is part of it- all genres. When ever I listen to so called ‘black’ music like R&B ‘they’ make fun of me too. Interesting how many of them listen to ‘old school’ music or love the Blues/Jazz and Motown performed by blacks and think it is great. We are mainly of white Irish and German descent (with different spices sprinkled all in-but think they admit to it?) Nearly everyone in our extended family is prejudiced. That to me is the saddest state to live in. They still talk about me since they learned I dated a black man. As for being white and well mannered-My friend is well mannered, better educated, has a higher standard of living and has a better attitude than any of them ever will.

JenniferParticipantThis is so absurd, i laugh whenever I hear it. I got that so much when i was younger. The idea of being well-read and well-spoken meant you were attemtping to ‘act white’, which really is the ultimate insult isn’t it? In a nutshell, it creates the idea that ‘blacks’ are dumb. And that is what I consider offensive. Just chalk it down to people just being really ignorant, and honestly that is all it is. Fools!

AndreaParticipantpersonally speaking, if i hear a white guy talking ‘black’, i dont’ get offended. i just think that it is annoying. i’m black myself, so to hear that coming from a white person’s mouth is just plain annoying. white people can have just as hard, or even harder, childhoods than black people do, but only black people can really talk ‘ghetto’.
