Unfortunately, the general public does discriminate against obese individuals – we don’t enjoy seeing them. How many TV shows or movies have you seen with fat people making love or living a ‘quality life’? There is something about being obese that is equated with gluttony, no self-control, poor hygiene and general unattractiveness. I too had a major weight problem in high school and college. I was miserable, and though I knew I should love and accept myself as I was, I couldn’t. I felt that everything I ate, the way I walked, the clothes I wore, even my interaction with the opposite sex, was being scrutinized. People, for the most part, are very harsh critics. You either decide that you don’t care, or you make changes to be satisfied with who you are.

Latin Americans, South Americans and Mexicans are among some of the most racist people I have ever encountered. I believe it stems from the strong presence of a classist society, where the influential, successful and wealthy minority of the population tends to be ‘light-skinned’ and of European, rather than indigenous or African, descent. My Colombian roommate in college made it very clear to me that there was not one drop of Indian blood in her family; and the numerous Mexican nationals that I know make frequent disparaging remarks about Blacks and Indians. Also, in Latin America the ideal of beauty leans toward the fair skinned/haired people, who are tall and have ‘light’ eyes. Many Latins suffer from a major inferiority complex, rejecting their own brown, exotic beauty and idealizing a more Anglo Saxon image.
