The republican party, ‘Party of Lincoln’ decided in the early 60’s to seek the white southern and tradionally white democratic vote. This came to a Head when LBJ was muscling through the civil rights act of 1964, not real popular with southern whites. The GOP fought often vicously filibustering against civil rights being federally mandated. LBJ a southern Dem pushed it through. FYI Republican who voted for Civil Rights; Bob Dole, against, George Bush the elder.
