ScottParticipantI am not sure where you got your information, but I am afraid it is not accurate. Abraham Lincoln came to faith in Christ after the death of his son, Willie. Dr. Phineas Gurley, who was Lincoln’s pastor at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, affirmed that his son’s death and the visit to the Gettyburg battlefield in 1863 finally led Lincoln to personal faith in Christ. William Henry Harrison said this in his inaugural address, March 4, 1841. “I deem the present occasion sufficiently important and solemn to justify me in expressing to my fellow citizens a profound reverence for the Christian religion, and a thorough conviction that sound morals, religious liberty and a just sense of religious responsibility are essentially connected with all true and lasting happiness.” Ulysses Grant wrote this to the editor of the Sunday School Times in Phiadelphia: “My advice to Sunday schools, no matter what their denomination, is: Hold fast to the Bible as the sheet anchor of your liberties; write its precepts in your hearts, and practice them in your lives. To the influence of this Book are we indebted for all the progress made in true civilization, and to this must we look as our guide in the future. Righteousness exalteth a nation; but sin is a reproach to any people.”

ScottParticipantThomas Jefferson, on April 21, 1803, wrote to Dr. Benjamin Rush: ‘My views … are the result of a life of inquiry and reflection, and very different from the anti-Christian system imputed to me by those who know nothing of my opinions. To the corruption of Christianity I am, indeed, opposed; but not to the genuine precepts of Jesus himself. I am a Christian in the only sense in which he wished any one to be; sincerely attached to his doctrines in preference to all others…’ Theodore Roosevelt said: ‘… I believe that the next half century will determine if we will advance the cause of Christian civilization or revert to the horrors of brutal paganism. The thought of modern industry in the hands of Christian charity is a dream worth dreaming. The thought of industry in the hands of paganism is a nightmare beyond imagining.’ ‘Every thinking man, when he thinks, realizes that the teachings of the Bible are so interwoven and entwined with our whole civic and social life that it would be literally impossible for us to figure ourselves what that life would be if these standards were removed. We would lose almost all the standards by which we now judge both public and private morals.’ I think it is obvious from these quotes that these men had faith in God and the Bible. While some of the quotes don’t mention Christ by name, I think it would be a greater ‘leap’ to believe these men did not have faith in Christ. All the quotes above I have references for if anyone is interested

ScottParticipantAndrew Johnson said: ‘Let us look forward to the time when we can take the flag of our country and nail it below the Cross, and there let it wave as it waved in the olden times, and let us gather around it and inscribe for our motto: ‘Liberty and Union, one and inseparable, now and forever,’ and exclaim, ‘Christ first, our country next!’ James Madison, in the 1785 session of the General Assembly of the State of Virginia, explained why he was against the Establishment of Religion by Law: ‘Because the policy of the bill is adverse to the diffusion of the light of Christianity. The first wish of those who ought to enjoy this precious gift, out to be, that it may be imparted to the whole race of mankind.’ Zachary Taylor, in acknowledging the receipt of a beautifully bound Bible and a copy of the U.S. Constitution, sent a message that was printed in the Frankfort Commonwealth, Feb. 21, 1849: ‘I accept with gratitude and pleasure your gift of this inestimable Volume. It was for the love of the truths of this great Book that our fathers abandoned their native shores for the wilderness. Animated by its lofty principles they toiled and suffered till the desert blossomed as a rose. The same thruths sustained them in their resolutions to become a free nation; and guided by the wisdom of this Book they founded a government under which we have grown from three million to more than twenty millions of people..’ There are so many quotes from George Washington that express his faith, it is hard to choose. But here are a few from his personal prayer book. ‘O most Glorious God, in Jesus Christ my merciful and loving Father, I acknowledge and confess my guilt, in the weak and imperfect performance of the duties of this day. I have called on Thee for pardon and forgiveness of sins…’ ‘…remove my sins from Thy presence, as far as the east is from the west, and accept of me for the merits of Thy son Jesus Christ, that when I come into Thy temple and compass Thine alter, my prayer may come before Thee as incense…’ ‘Bless O Lord the whole race of mankind, and let the world be filled with the knowledge of Thee and Thy Son, Jesus Christ…’

ScottParticipantYour facts are not right. Abraham Lincoln confessed faith in Christ after the death of his son, Willie. U.S. Grant wrote to a Sunday school class to hold fast to the Bible and practice its precepts in their lives. George Washington has so many references to his faith it is hard to choose one, but here is a quote from his prayer journal: “… be merciful to me, O God, and pardon me for Jesus Christ’s sake… Thou gavest Thy Son to die for me.” Thomas Jefferson called himself a Christian, although I probably would not call him one. I can provide references to quotes for all the presidents mentioned. They were Christians.
