The pale skin comes about due to the lack of sunshine. The drinking _is_ frequently excessive because of the wierd licensing laws. In the UK pubs and bars stop serving at 11pm and kick you out by 11:20 sharp. That's 10:30 and 10:50 respectively on Sundays. I don't drink myself but hey. Most people I know couldn't care less about the British Empire. Likewise, no one cares about the French, except maybe to like going to France and buying cheap wine. I am terribly rude, oftimes emotional and generally uninhibited, but I can see how a reaction to strange surroundings or people might bring out 'the reserve' where one retreats into oneself and is _terribly_ _terribly_ polite. It is also considered vulgar to talk about sex with people you don't know.
