OrleanasParticipantThere are many books that you can choose from such as biographies, essays and the like. IF you truly want to learn about the history and culture of blacks, I suggest you taking a course at a college. But to start, I’ll mention a sample of books which may give you a better undersdtanding of the historic roots and culture so that when you read the everyday fictions by Black authors you may get a better grasp of things and apply them to the history and relationship of Blacks in general. 1. The Riverside and/or Norton Anthology of African American Literature–great background info on what shaped the lyrical/musical aspect of Black Culture 2. When and Where I Enter by Paula Giddings–great info from a women-centered perspective of Black History 3. From Slavery to Freedom … edited by Franklin 4. ‘Slave’ Narratives are particularly informative I recommend that of Harriet Jacobs, Oloudah Equino, and Frederick Douglass. There are numerous books and films to choose from. Check your local library or bookstore, and better yet, take a course in a college. I hope my info helps.

OrleanasParticipantThat being said, is it dangerous to have sex when you have piercings there? I’m thinking that a man with a piercing on his penis who had sex would tear his or his partner’s very sensitive tissues if something went wrong. Is that ever an issue?

OrleanasParticipantFor the most part teaching has always been what I wanted to do, but I’ve not gotten the thumbs up from my teachers when I told them that that was what I wanted to do. One told me to go to technology because that was where the money is, and my mother told me that she always associated the job with lazy people once I finally decided to stick to it. That being said, there have been times when I ask myself if I should really consider this because I assume that people won’t think of me as being successful, that I won’t make a lot from it, that people won’t be impressed etc… What usually cheers me up is thinking of the difference a teacher can make by watching that movie LEAN ON ME.

OrleanasParticipantConsidering your age, I wouldn’t think that you attained that ‘middle class’ status on your own. I don’t think I’ve experienced the effects of racism, but I do know from history and what is out there that people of a ‘lower class’ have more things to contend with in terms of success. When that person is black, or another person of color for that matter, it’s twice as difficult. My point is that you are not in a position to say that people are crying wolf when you can’t even relate to them in the same way. I think that most people who cry wolf are the ones stuck at the bottom because they’re usually the ones stepped on from and on all levels.

OrleanasParticipantFrom reading some of the responses, I suppose you may think that females lose a lot of blood during menstruation, but the truth is, less than half a cup is lost throughout the whole process. As for me, it was so easy the first two years. I felt no pain or discomfort. I actually liked having my period. Now, I think it’s a nuisance, and dread the thought of getting it. For me, that’s a whole week of constant changing and stained panties. Needless to say, I find it annoying and unfair to the female sex.

OrleanasParticipantI really upsets me to hear people say that blacks and other minorities are in some positions because of Affirmative Action. What you seem to not think of when you say this is that Aftfirmative Action would not have been necessary had non-whites not been so unjust to others. I don’t doubt that you worked hard to get where you are now, but the fact that you’re white gave you certain privileges and access to things that minorities are allowed to have. Minorities work hard too. And as for the statement that you don’t know how often you’ve seen a person of color advance just so that ‘our management team reflect the community it serves,’ why do you automatically think that that is the only reason why that the person got promoted? Couldn’t that person have been promoted just because he deserved it? To me it seems like most whites believe that the only way a non-white person can move on to anything of a higher position is by being given a freeby. The thought that the person is qualified seems to be non-existent and maybe it’s because of that that some of the things you complain about are happening.

OrleanasParticipantFrom what I know of that story, the media insist he was targeted because the shooters were against jocks and people of color. Since Shoels was a popular “jock” who was also black, he was a main target. Since he wasn’t the only one in the room when he was killed, don’t you question why they went after him, instead of the others around him who may or may not have been jocks as well?

OrleanasParticipantThere is a differnce in the way the sexes shop. Although females take longer to shop, they end up spending less money than men when buying gifts, especially during the holiday season. A survey conducted found that in the haste to leave a store, men pay an average of $200 more than females.

OrleanasParticipantGod knows I’ve seen a few of them with hazel and green eyes and blond hair when the color obviously isn’t natural. I often wonder who they think they’re fooling, but I think I’ve come to realize this is the same case as bald men with comb-overs. They know they are bald but want to fool others by doing that nonsense. In the end they only fool themselves and look pathetic. As to the ones with the fake eye and hair colors, they freak and gross me out because they look like they have cataracts and have been infested by a new form of hair fungus.

OrleanasParticipantI have noticed this also, but I don’t believe it’s only specific to someone’s race. I’m black and have no problem pronouncing the word. In fact, I find saying “axing” more difficult. I think the problem for others is that they’ve been so used to saying it the wrong way for so long that it has become natural. Had they been corrected early, they might not have this problem. I can tell you that this difficulty is not based on race, but rather on laziness.
