Funny, the first thing I noticed upon moving to Detroit more than 20 years ago was that as soon as a black street crosser noticed I was white, he or she would deliberately slow down – exactly the opposite of the polite “trot” that may be a reflexively polite acknowledgment of a driver.

Black female bank tellers in Detroit have refused to cash large checks from major financial institutions for my wife. Yes racism is absolutely prevalent. It’s part of our cultural landscape. Lets put it this way I know that I as a white guy can go pretty much anywhere in this country and sign into a hotel or get a seat at a restaurant. There are still places where I should actualy steer clear of for my personal well-being. Other ethnicitys don’t experiance such freedom of travel and are refused, hounded and harrassed in many places in this country. until our boundries are broken by intrepid souls willing to venture outside thier respective ghettos there will alway be racism. ‘Unfortunately’ not all of us feel free to pull out the race card when things don’t go our way.
