I would be interested to know where you got your statistics from. Could I have the name of the publication/website/paper you got the particular statistic about violent crime in Australia?

If it is a fact that men 'dominate' anything, does it really matter? Does it worry me, as a female, all that much? Besides, women cop enough flak for having joined the workforce (ie the breakdown of the family = increased community violence caused by a) men who feel marginalised because wifey isn't home waiting for them with a home cooked meal or b) kids who, suposedly, didn't get enough love). These are views expressed with frightening regularity. Although, if women merely going to work has caused all of these problems with society, maybe we have been 'dominant' all along!!! :P

I don't think you can say to your daughter 'No Boyfriends!' and just leave it at that. I think to a certain extent that your husband is over-reacting if he doesn't even want her to communicate by phone with boys. What does she do at school all day, just ignore them? My parents and I always had frank and open discussion about all things to do with sexuality and we did discuss boys. My parents always cracked jokes about the whole situation and when I eventually did start dating I was 16 years old and my parents just had to trust that all the discussions that we had together would be enough for me to do the right thing. Having said that, yourself and your husband know your daughter the best, if she is level headed and you know the boy in question and possibly can set some ground rules without encroaching on her freedom overly, then I think you have a good compromise. All the best! Michelle.

I feel quite uncomfortable around Aboriginals - and probably they think that I am a shover/ignorer too. But this is only because I feel that, given the current climate of race non-relations in Australia, I don't want to draw attention to me maybe looking at them the wrong way. I know in my head that anyone who has a problem with the way I might look at them, black or white, has the problem and not me...but I would rather avoid a situation if possible.
