MichelleParticipantI think you should approach a friendship with the African-American woman as you would with any woman. Take the time to get to know her. If you have questions, ask. Try to be honest when she asks you questions that may be uncomfortable. I work with three white women and have formed a friendship with one because we think alike and share a lot in common. This woman may be black, but give her more credit for being a good person and someone you find interesting.

MichelleParticipantIt’s all about being ‘cool’. And it’s not new. My Dad and uncles use to ‘gangsta lean’ all the time when I was growing up. It’s one thing to have a car, it’s a whole other thing to have the right attitude in your car. Imagine a grown black man driving all huddled up like a little old lady, not cool, plain and simple. One of the down sides to being ‘cool’ in your car is that you are easily distracted, placing you in the ‘bad driver’ category. But the same can be said for women who put on their makeup on the car of for professionals who talk on their cell phones.

MichelleParticipantI have noticed this same trend following the 9/11 tragedy, and it frightens me greatly. It’s very easy to alienate others based on physical features. As a result, people who are Arab or look as if they may be Arab deal with the backlash of hurt and anger. We need to realize that one person or small group of people doesn’t correctly identify an entire group of people. When you make those types of generalizations, it becomes easier to discriminate and hate, leading us toward genocide, systematic racism and hate crimes.
