I understand that non-smokers don’t want to inhale second-hand smoke, but passing laws to forbid smoking AROUND buildings seems excessive. Until the issue of pollution is more fully addressed, I will continue to feel like I am being singled out for punishment. At the college I attend, they do not allow smoking on the grounds at all. I feel this is unfair since I am paying for an education. It seems everywhere I go I have to leave to smoke. A hospital in my area won’t even let you sit in your vehicle and smoke! I don’t have children, so I don’t think that they should have the right to forbid my smoking. In addition, where do the laws stop? What will be next? Okay, let’s not allow a certain type of dress or hairstyle….next let’s decide for other people what they are allowed to say…where will it end? I vote. I pay taxes. Why do I have to stand out in the rain or snow? I resent not having a smoking section in restaurants in particular. I don’t mind being separated, but I do mind paying money for an evening out and having to leave quickly so that I can have a cig. So, it’s okay for people to be offensively dressed, or allow their children to scream….but I can’t smoke. This is fair?

I wish that you could run across some of the good ones! Please do not judge all of America by the encounters you have experienced so far. America is a relatively young country and still has some ‘growing up’ to do, so that may explain the attitudes that you have had to put up with. I hope you have better luck in the future.

It’s a shame to litter, no matter if it’s cig butts or anything else! Throwing butts out is also a fire hazard in some places. On the other hand, it is irritating when there is no place to put cig butts on the ever-lessening areas outside where we are allowed to smoke. I carry a metal tin to put my butts in so I don’t have to litter and I offer it to others to dispose of theirs. It would be helpful if there were more receptacles to discard butts in. One reason people throw them out the vehicle window is that a used ashtray lessens the trade in value of an automobile. That is no excuse because there are other options, like a ashtray that fits in a cup holder.
