MariamMParticipantI’ve learned that growing up in the Bay Area where there is a lot of diversity, my situation may be different from others. However, to me it’s never been a big deal being Muslim when everyone else was not. I do not come from a fundamentalist Islamic family, I do not cover my hair or dress completely covered all of the time. Those aspects may have made me seem more like my classmates than different from them. But at the same time, I did not eat pork, drink alcohol, or celebrate Christmas religiously. Being Muslim provided my classmates a means to learn about my religion and provided me with a way to figure it out for myself as well. I never saw myself as incredibly different, I just figured we all lived life differently in the religious aspect, but that was only one of many aspects in li

MariamMParticipantI’m a 19 year-old college student, and I’m so sick of men’s demeaning catcalls and staring at me like a piece of meat. It makes me wary of all men because it has happened so often. It seems to be a way for them to gain control of us, they see us as naive. It’s harassment, but since it happens so often in the public setting, people have resorted to “ignoring” it instead of doing something about it. If this isn’t pushing patriarchy forward, I don’t know what is.

MariamMParticipantSitting upright makes you look like a prick. Adolescence is all about rebellion, right? Watch music channels like BET and the videos all show rich men surrounded by women, driving expensive cars with their seat reclined. They’re rich, powerful, and deviant. It’s just a way to look cool. They’ll grow out of it, at least we hope?

MariamMParticipantMen and women are different, of course! Feminism is not about ignoring those differences or pretending they don’t exist, it’s about getting the word out that a gender’s attributes doesn’t make them superior to another gender. That goes for men over women or women or men. It also goes outside of gender to sex, race, class, religion, etc.
